How to post articles on FR like a pro(vanity)
12/31/2010 | Delacon

Posted on 12/31/2010 8:09:55 AM PST by Delacon

So you've found an article on the interweb you want to post on FR.  You have clicked "Post" and put in the title of the article, your topics, your key words, source and source url. Now you come to the "body of thread" section.  You want to post the article just as it appears on the website you lifted it from complete with all the links, pics and snazzy fonts. Here is a quick and easy way to do it.  You need a text to html converter.  WAIT! Don't give up yet. Bear with me. You don't need to download anything and all you have to really know is how to copy and paste. You can do this all online with very little effort. There is an easy online text to html converter at this link: http://knopok.net/text-to-html.html (the best and easiest one out there IMO). Click on the link(or cut and paste the link to the address bar in another window) then save it to your favorite places.  Then open it in a seperate window from FR. Next, go to the window with the article that you want to post open in it.  If the article has a "print" option or icon, click on that to get rid of all the banners and ads you don't want to show up in your post.  Don't worry if it doesn't have one because you are going to copy and paste the article to the html converter and you can touch the article up by deleteing banners and ads once you paste the article to the converter. So take your pointer and start at the beginning of the article, click and drag until you get to the end of the article or wherever you want to stop, highlighting the whole area.   Right click on the highlighted area and select "copy".  Now go to the html converter window.  You will see a big box with all these toolbars that looks much like what you see when you open microsoft word. Don't worry, the only icons on these tool bars that you really need to know are "source" and "new page".  The "source" icon is in the upper lefthand corner and conveniently says "source".  The "new page" icon is two icons over from the "source" icon and looks like a blank page. Start by clicking on the "new page" icon to clear out all the unnecessary  text that the website uselessly added to the big white box below all the toolbar icons. The big white box below all the icons is where you are now going to paste your article. Right click in the big white box and click on the paste option in the drop down box. Your article should appear exactly as it appears in the original article. Now comes the cool part(IMO). Go up to the above mentioned "source" icon and click on it. This will convert the article to html which is what you need to paste in the "body of thread" section of your FR post to get all the bells and whistles. So right click on the converted html text and click on" select all", then right click on the highlighted area and select "copy". Now go to the FR window where your post is and right click on the "body of thread" box and select "paste". Your article should appears as html in the box. Click on preview and then post and you are done. Happy posting and Happy New Year!

I like it when discussion boards have a control panel on top with various functions (font, size, color, and posting pics). Makes it esier.

When you use any html tags on FR, you’re committed to using them for everything. The “HTML auto-detect” function on FR turns off all formatting due to the presence of the < i > and < /i >. You have to add a line break tag < br > or a paragraph tag < p > because you italicized.

As always, remove the blank spaces in the tag, they’re only there so the “tag” will show as text.

Jeeze, no good deed goes unpunished. I didn’t have a fail. I just didn’t feel like doing paragraphs. I didn’t feel like spell checking for that matter. The link works. Its a good editor that gives you more control than just clicking on “view source”. I did this at some other freeper’s request. Give me a break.

Imho, those functions are insulting.

Thanks for the link about posting HTML. I’d like to see more posts that attempt to help FReepers interact with Free Republic’s software.

Perhaps someone can explain why the paragraphs that the poster likely included in the “Body of Thread” box disappeared.

You might want to take your own advice and clean up this post! Below is your comment with example paragraphs. Feel free to copy this method next time you do a Vanity or any other type of post.

So you’ve found an article on the interweb you want to post on FR. You have clicked “Post” and put in the title of the article, your topics, your key words, source and source url. Now you come to the “body of thread” section. You want to post the article just as it appears on the website you lifted it from complete with all the links, pics and snazzy fonts.

So take your pointer and start at the beginning of the article, click and drag until you get to the end of the article or wherever you want to stop, highlighting the whole area. The “new page” icon is two icons over from the “source” icon and looks like a blank page.

You have to use a P tag to make paragraphs if you use the I tag. FreeRepublic is set up so any use of HTML tags require the use of all such tags throughout the post. If you simply want to make paragraphs without the I tag then just space them out. Other wise put a P tag at the end of each paragraph(or the beginning depending on how you look at it!) Don’t forget to enclose the tag with the < > markers.

Another thing you should do. You should write a blog, of around 5 sentences, and then put a two sentence teaser to the other three sentences.

Yes, it’s okay if the blog is completely lifted from another blog. It’s a blog, after all. :-)

We don't feel like trying to decipher your unreadable post on 'How to Post Like a Pro!" LOL.

Hint: a pro would format it so it was readable...

EPIC...
