It is an industrial fact, posted at the American Petroleum Institute, that over 45% of every barrel of oil is used for manufacturing materials, medical supplies, building materials, food packaging (water bottles, etc,) plastics, electrical components etc,,, The list is vast and thorough.

Conceptually I still agree that research money should be awarded on a per-Joule-output-vs-input basis.
