Well, there actually have been a handful of cases like this in Japan. Apparently a particular model of foot massager ended up killing a handful of users there when it was improperly used as a neck massager. The massaging nodules caught caught shirt collars, ties, etc. and the powerful motor used in the device quickly choked the victims.

That said, I’m skeptical in this case. I would think a device purpose-designed to be a neck massager would have a much less powerful motor and wouldn’t be likely to snag necklaces, etc. as the mis-used massager in Japan.
We’ll see, though. At any rate, RIP to this poor woman!
