Runaway groom: Jilted bride sues ex-fiance for $100K
MSNBC ^ | 12/29/2010 | Hugo Kugiya

Dominique Buttitta wanted to get married in style, so she spared no expense on her upcoming nuptials: $30,000 to reserve a banquet hall outside Chicago; $11,000 for flowers and spot lighting; $10,000 for an orchestra; $5,000 on her wedding dress and veil.

As Buttitta excitedly continued preparations, the costs kept mounting. Then, four days before the big day, her fiance called the Oct. 2 wedding off.

With such short notice, she could not recover most the money she had spent — so the 32-year-old lawyer is suing. In a civil suit filed a few weeks ago in Illinois, she accuses Vito Salerno, 31, of “breach of promise to marry” and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She’s seeking more than $95,000 in damages, plus the costs of filing the suit.

It sounds like the groom had the right idea.

This groom should go to court and pay her and thank the Gods he didn't marry her. He could have lost everything, got no sex, and still would have to go to court. This way he just gets the same and be done with...Captainblogspot..nomarriage.

Did he try to get the engagement ring back?

that is the purpose of the engagement ring.

he cancels she keeps it.

she cancels he gets it back.

There is no more “breach of promise”.

She seems like a bridzilla.

$100K that cheap... He might have bought her a house.

He escaped just in time.

Who was it that said “whenever I get the urge to get married I just find a woman I cant stand and buy her a house”.

Take a look at the pic of Ms. Buttitta with the article. Even if the groom has to pay the $100K for walking, he still got the better end of the bargain.

And one other thing—while I agree in concept that the groom should have to bear a share of the wedding expense for calling it off, I’m sure he didn’t have much say over the $100K price tag. That is way too much for a wedding but I’m sure the bride—like way too many modern brides—demanded that her special day cost a fortune.

I think you're right. Do you guys remember that crazy eyed woman that took flight before the wedding a few years ago? The one that claimed to have been kidnapped by Mexicans or lesbians or somesuch? I think that idiot man actually ended up marring her.

Yep, I bet he had absolutely no say over the wedding preparation. She is probably one of those crazy control freaks. (based on this and her being a lawyer, lol.)

Nearly all states abolished the cause of action “breach of promise to marry” back in the 1930s. Illinois may be an exception, but I doubt it.

She “ain’t” bad looking but she looks older than 32.

I recall going out with a female attorney once. I could have easily married her and she became very successful. I did absolutely nothing with her because I was worried I would get sued for something. Failure to “perform” - you name it. It was a major turnoff.
