Tolls also help keep the riff-raff (aka, “other drivers”) off. Provided that there are decent alternative “free” routes; the tolls reduce congestion. Less congestion, means faster travel, with fewer stops. That saves time — which, for a lot of people is money. Also, if you cut down on stops and starts; you also cut down on vehicle wear, and improve gas mileage. Those are important considerations for commercial vehicles.

I note that short-hop drivers, independent truckers and all sorts of tradesmen’s trucks/vans stay off the turnpike making it a pleasure, if a bit boring, to drive.
