Nothing would keep me away...this "protect the family's privacy" is nothing but a cover.

It's probably a cover for "my daughter-in-law and grandchildren despise me and consider me responsible for my son's suicide, and rightly so". Showing up at his son's funeral would only cause his son's family more grief.
