Good article; thanks for posting.

Anyone know where exactly all those awful (I’m trying to be kind) NGOs get their money from? Tax payer money or donations (private, corporate,...)?

Grants of all sorts. Foundation grants alone fill a couple of large binders. “Grants facilitator” is a profession and some of them work for multiple orgs at one time. Some are paid by the hour by the grant-seeker. Others contract for a percentage of the grant.

Then there are State and Federal grants. I have seen enterprising grants writers find small, $20k *administrative grants* that they attach to other people’s 6-figure grant applications (which take months of work), naming themselves as recipients. If the writer of the large grant complains, the facilitator simply stops all work on their application until they get *paid*.

It is a racket and has been for about 20-25 years.

They do get donations and some get endowments, but grants are the bread-and-butter of NGOs.
