Was Ronald Reagan a secret snitch?
L.A. Times ^ | December 12, 2010 | John Meroney

Did Ronald Reagan secretly give the FBI names of people he suspected were communists when he was a movie star and Hollywood labor chief in the 1940s?

This allegation resurfaced in the media just before Thanksgiving when the San Jose Mercury News, which published excerpts from Reagan's FBI file to great international acclaim in 1985, ran a column revisiting its original story about Reagan the snitch. It implies that Reagan was a shadowy operator in cahoots with the notorious FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, orchestrating their next Hollywood Red scare.

The answer? Maybe. But Reagan was hardly betraying friends and confidants. He told the bureau what he told others publicly about communist influences in the Hollywood he knew. He didn't seek out the FBI originally; agents came to him. Moreover, he had little to tell them that the bureau didn't already know. It's hardly the picture of a Red-baiting Judas.

We have freepers here that have actually killed commies, I imagine they would be proud to find out this is true.

As I read this column, it’s a defense of Reagan and his role in the Hollywood unions during the Cold War as they were taken over by the Communists. Further, it takes the San Jose Mercury to task for jumping to the conclusion that Reagan was a snitch, when in fact, he was very open publicly about what he saw happening with the Hollywood unions.,

WTH? Reagan the snitch. It implies that Reagan was a shadowy operator...Red-baiting Judas.

What pejoratives. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions, if these same "snitches" had outed Nazis they would be being praised as Great American Heros. These dunces in Hollyweird truly inhabit a mental LaLa land.

Hoover wasn’t a “lady”, don’t feed that smear.

I didn’t know that - yeah, those Joads were living large compared to Stalin’s slaves.

Reagan was a great patriot who loved America.. Unmasking domestic red traitors was—and is—a patriotic act. If this story is true, God Bless him. If it not, God Bless him anyway. We’ll not see his like again.

I certainly hope so!

Communists aren't admirable free-thinking martyrs, any more than Nazis are!

Of course, if you're a Hegelian then whether one is the "thesis" or the "antithesis" makes all the difference.

Not just Hollywood. The entire Roosevelt administration was RIDDLED with them. Read Mitrohkin’s The Sword and the Shield. Henry Wallace, FDR’s VP until 1945 was a commie spy. He almost became president—if he hadn’t been replaced on the ticket by Truman, Alger Hiss, the darling of the left, even to this day WAS A COMMUNIST SPY. That is verified by KGB documents.

I equate commies with Nazis. Let me see...if I was an actor in the thirties and forties, and I knew people who had Nazi ties, would I report them to the FBI? Gee, report Nazis to the FBI, that would have been horrible. (heavy sarcasm)

I wish I knew Reagan personally. Wish I could have called him “friend”.
Me too.

Meanwhile Red Ted Kennedy communicated with KGB agents to thwart President Reagan’s agenda.

Communism kills and the LAtte Times again makes a neo-commie case for historical revisionism.
