Thanks for the Mitchum plug. I was waiting for someone to mention him. Of all the guys who played tough guys in movies, Mitchum was one of the truly tough guys in real life. Deborah Kerr had an anecdote about Mitchum punching out a would-be tough guy in a bar while at a post film party after shooting a western. It's pretty funny.

Mitchum, Kerr, and some other members of the cast and crew were enjoying a few drinks on the second floor of a bar in some small town out west after finishing the flick. While they were enjoying their drinks, some local idiot who wanted to make a name for himself started badgering Mitchum. Mitchum asked him he wanted to take a swing at him. The guy said he would. Mitchum, an ex pro-boxer, turned his cheek and let the guy hit him flush. Mitchum barely turned his head. He then asked the guy if he minded if he, Mitchum took a swing at him. The guy said yes. Mitchum hit the guy so hard he not knocked him out the door and down the steps. Mitchum then turned to the rest of the film people and said "heres to everyone here and to the man who fell down the stairs." Or something like that.
