More removed from crawling and babbling than you realize.
My son was speaking, not babbling or baby talk, full, grammatically complete sentences, by the time he was two. Any adult could carry on a conversation with him and get intelligent, mature responses.
It blew me away what kind of reasoning power, powers of observation, and abstract thinking a child that age can have. People don't expect a lot out of kids that age and the kids live up to, or down to, those expectations.
I realize that many kids that age can have active imaginations, but when the boy described something that he knew nothing about and the father immediately recognized it, that gives it a LOT of credibility to me.
How many four year olds have you interacted with personally? Do you have kids of your own? You talk like someone who has very experience with children. Those of us who've dealt with them know better.
