This happened two streets over from my house, about 1/4 mile from me.

fell from the sky as the landing gear came down on the approach

Tragic. But that's why they warn you to have your seat backs in the upright position on landing.

He was dead long before he fell.

Had to be.

If he could get to that wheel well and climb inside, a terrorist could get to that wheel well and stick a bomb with an altitude trigger on it in there. Major problem.

However, here's the scariest part of the whole article:

In February of this year, a frozen body was found in the wheel well on a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York when it landed at Narita International Airport in Japan, but it was later discovered that he did not actually stow away on the plane in New York. In fact, his body had been undetected in the wheel well since he stowed away Dec. 12, 2009, during a flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to New York.

What the heck went on here? As a former crew chief, I guarantee you I wouldn't be nissing a body in the wheel well of my jet one time, much less for a couple of months.

Why stow away in a wheel well? No windows, no life support systems, no sound proofing, and gear operated by a hydraulic system designed to put that gear in the well despite a human stowaway. I don’t even know if there is room in there for a human. I would seriously doubt it as extra space means weight and planes are built for the least weight possible. If he wasn’t crushed by the gear, the hypoxia would have done the job.

Dumb move by the kid, but the really scary part is that he was able to breech security. He could just as well been a terrorist attaching a bomb to the plane’s wheel well. Meanwhile the TSA is making little old ladies and kids go through their nudie scanners just to keep us safe.

That was a plot line on an old “Law & Order” episode I think.

Outpost I know that area very well, if he fell out just a few seconds earlier his body might not have been found for months, very sad but at least his family didn’t go months without knowing.

In all that time no one did any inspection/maintenance work on that wheel well? I thought these planes were inspectred routinely and frequently.

Kid sounded like he was bright, but lacking judgment and maturity. Sad- it sounds like he really could have made something of himself.

Uncle analysis fail:

“It seems pretty far-fetched to me,’’ said Brown, questioning how he could have made it across the tarmac and onto a plane with the increased scrutiny of the TSA. “He would have to go into the terminal, find out where the plane is, and he’d have to go to TSA to get to where that plane is. Then he would have to orient himself once he got on the field. That’s just too much for a child to do.

1.Why go through the terminal at all? Why not just hop the fence?
2. Finding where airplanes are? How hard is that? An observant and articulate toddler could point them out, much less a 16 year-old.
3. Is the TSA actually watching aircraft on the tarmac/at the gate from the ground, or are they just shaking down grandmothers in wheelchairs at the security checkpoint? Never mind- I think I know the answer to that.

Amazing that he would have acccessed the tarmac without being noticed yet alone climb into the wheel well. The plane took off at 7 pm, so it would have still been light outside. Puzzling.

Probably done on a stupid dare.

He probably croaked during the flight and just fell out during the landing gear drop.

“It’s a terrible tragedy, what happened to this young man, but if that was someone with a different motive . . . if that was a terrorist, that could have been a bomb that was planted, undetected. This is very serious.’’

It is a terrible tragedy and my prayers go out to this kid's family. And once again we'll see the TSA REACT to the situation. They're always one step behind.

Fatalities from hiding in aircraft wheel wells happen with disturbing regularity. So much so that you would think that by now the airlines would put a sign inside the wheel well, to the effect of “Don’t hide here, or you will die. Leave immediately.”

Maybe even put an emergency call button in there. Granted, by the time they run out of oxygen, it is a bit late, but still.
