Elizabeth Edwards's cancer fight has taken a turn for the worse, with the disease spreading to her liver and doctors recommending against additional treatment.
"Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends," the Edwards family says in a statement to PEOPLE.
On Monday, Edwards, 61, posted a Facebook message to her friends.
"I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope," she writes. "These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that."
Edwards, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004, was briefly hospitalized last week after not feeling well over Thanksgiving. Doctors said her cancer had metastasized to the liver.
With the sudden turn, family members including daughter Cate, a Washington lawyer, and her brother and sister, Jay and Nancy Anania hastened to Chapel Hill, N.C., to be with her.
"It isnt possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day," Edwards wrote on Facebook. "To you I simply say: you know. With love, Elizabeth."

Prayers to Elizabeth and family. This was expected, but not quite this soon. Hopefully this is just a set back and she will be good as new soon.
No fan of Elizabeth Edwards, but I do pray for God to give strength to her children in the coming days.
If I read that right, John made it about him.
The Monday Facebook post does have ominous overtones about numbered days. I was never a fan of the husband but wish her no ill and if her end is near I hope it comes quickly and peacefully.
This is very sad, especially for their children.
God bless her and forgive her, and I suggest we all forgive her for using cancer as a gimmick to attract sympathy votes for John. I found it reprehensible, but this is nothing I would wish upon anyone.
Prayers for Mrs. Edwards and her family, especially her children.
She has been a difficult and charmless woman, but no one should have to suffer with this horrible disease; no one deserves this. Sometimes emotional and physical suffering refine one’s character, and that appears to be the case in this situation. I pray for her suffering to be eased and for God to bless and sustain Elizabeth and her family.
Hopefully this is just a setback, and she’ll have a full recovery. God be with her.
I’m no fan of her (ex?)husband, but I have no ill-will toward Elizabeth Edwards. Seems like a nice lady.
SnakeDoc
I pray for her and her family to have the strength, grace and serenity to deal with whatever happens to her. Except, of course, for her scumbag (ex)-husband John, who hopefully will be indicted and in jail soon.
Yup.
Amen.....may she find peace.
She fought for 8 years. At the end she told my brother that she was ready for nature to take its course. We all miss her, but she is in a better place without pain now.
SHe was an enabler of John. She is just like Hillary in that regard. She knew what kind of guy John was, just never thought he would ‘screw’ her over. Just like Hillary. Happy ot have John screw other people over, though. I will never believe she didn’t know all the crap John did and certainly wasn’t bothered he was doing it to other people. She was happy to be a front for him as long as it worked out well for them.
I suspect Tony will be one of the first to greet her when her time comes.
Just imagine how close we were to having that snake(John Edwards) in the White House. Within a year, we would have found out he was unfaithful, and now the First Lady(whom he cheated on) would be about to die.
What a circus that would have been....
Prayers for Mrs Edwards and her children. I lost my mother to breast cancer last Christmas, I know their grief.
I pray that she finds grace at its source.
“If I recall correctly she blasted the DU’er for mocking Tony Snow after his death by cancer.
I suspect Tony will be one of the first to greet her when her time comes.”
she will be going in the wrong direction.
