So about 292 people supposedly get killed when cars are backing up. The government wants to mandate cameras at a cost of $2.9Billion per year. So about $10million per death. But that assumes these deaths would be avoided by having a camera. Which people will ignore just like they ignore their mirrors or people will stare at the video and ignore everything else.
What a waste. What a joke.
Something else to come to think about it. Usually when I park, I like to park in a way where I park face out so when I leave, just move forward and leave. I usually either back into a parking spot or pull through from one stall to the next.
Of course, some places where people are control freaks, you have to park front-end inward and won’t let you pull through the stall or back in. School’s are guilty of that. My H.S. had that rule which I ignored.
Won’t the Law of Unintended Consequences kick in here? To wit: People become overly reliant on the backup cameras, become less vigilant generally, and even more kids get run over. Shouldn’t that effect be tested for first?
If these are to be OE units & I’m sure they will, the consumer cost is likely going to be out of sight on replacement parts. Just the camera on one American made P/U was listed at $600+(OE) Complete aftermarket kit with 2 cameras, monitor & installing parts was about $145. I don’t know what the monitor would be for said P/U,but if just the camera is $600+,you can see what a scam this is for the consumer once it’s out of warranty. Another consideration is how soon some of the parts are obsoleted.
