Breaking News10:27pm UK, Saturday November 27, 2010 Pakistani Plane Crash Kills At Least 11 Share Share CommentsRichard Williams, Sky News Online

A cargo plane crashed into a residential area of Pakistan's largest city, sparking a huge blaze and causing at least 11 casualties. The aircraft came down in Karachi with eight crew on board, less than two minutes after taking off.

All eight, including six Pakistanis, are thought to have died in the crash, with at least three casualties on the ground.

The plane crashed in a housing complex for naval officers in the neighbourhood of Dalmai, it is reported.

Reporters at the scene said several buildings were on fire and loud explosions could be heard.

Witness Hasan Hashmi said fire could be seen from one of the plane's engines as it flew overhead.

Aviation authority spokesman Pervais George said the Russian-made Ilyshin IL-76 cargo plane was heading to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, when it came down.

Police said injured people had been evacuated to local hospitals, but had no immediate confirmation on numbers or whether there had been any deaths.

The explosion caused by the crash was so powerful that local residents thought it was triggered by a bomb, said Karachi police chief Fayyas Leghari.

He said: "The crash has created a large fire. The fire brigade is on site and trying to extinguish the flames, but the fire is too large to bring under control quickly, so it will take time.

"It was a huge blast. People thought it was a bomb blast. Police are trying to assess the number of casualties. Several injured people have been taken to the local hospital."

A Civil Aviation Authority official speaking on condition of anonymity said the plane crashed into a building under construction close to navy residential apartments.

Could be, as NATO is assisting the AU logistically in Sudan.
