Anoreth is smoking only outside in the brisk fresh air. I don’t even smell it in her clothes, to speak of.

I think today’s generation of young adults, 16-30 or so, is smoking more than people my age did, because they didn’t grow up with parents’ smoking, and because society’s institutions have placed smoking as the worst possible thing, ignoring so many other activities that are obviously immoral and productive of much more immediate health risks, such as promiscuous sex.

We have always been low-key about smoking, saying that it wasn’t our problem if others smoked, but not in our house. It’s the culture she’s in now, but as she moves up in rank or leaves the service for another phase of life, things will change.

We have to experiment with the things that are considered taboo in society, and our generation was no better than the one before us or worse than the next one, and so on.

Given the appropriate amount of time and education/observation, we conform to what is best for us because we recognize that it is.

“Water seeks its own level,” and the best we can do is teach our children to think about the consequences of their actions. The rest is up to them.
