Kinda hard to handle a rifle for in home defense.

BUT...If you might be thinking doing some varmint hunting also, a hand gun and a rifle in .22lr is great. Just make sure to double tap for home defense.

Heck just for shooting experience, a .22 is fun and cheap. And a hand gun an rifle can be had for less than the cost of 1 Berretta.

And firing a rifle indoors will make your ears bleed.

I hate 9mm, but alas it has so much going for it given the OP's parameters. Cheap, low recoil, high capacity, and one can have a magazine of Glasers for the home (no overpenetration), Blazers at the range (cheap crap, don't bother recovering "brass"), Hydro-shok for going into enemy territory.

I hate Glocks too, but in this case its the best bet. Practically everyone owns at least one, parts are all over the place, cheap (its rare to wear one out so a police return is cheap and good), high capacity, and they are largely fool-proof without having to obtain muscle memory to fiddle with safeties and grip. They are indestructable, don't rust or decompose, and can handle idiot relatives who put thousands of rounds through them without ever once cleaning the barrel. And if one so desires, laser guide rods give it cool poser value down at the indoor range.

I live at 8,500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies right next to the Roosevelt National Forest. Mountain Lions and black bears can also be an issue. Especially in spring and fall for the bears. I have had a bear smash out a window trying to get inside. It busted the window frame out of the wall with the force it was hit with. The dogs ended up chasing it away, but I keep a Mossberg 500 12ga with slugs most of the time. I have also kept a 375 H&H magnum and a 444 Marlin lever action for HD. Closest neighbors are a long way away with forest in between. It is difficult to clear a house with a rifle.

Another issue is that many women can’t pull back the slide on a semi-auto. I know my wife can’t operate the slide on any of my semi’s. She has a Taurus light weight 357 loaded with 38’s
