A WOMAN was trapped in her bathroom for three weeks after her door lock broke and her nocturnal pleas for help were ignored by neighbours.

The woman emerged in a "very weakened" state when rescue workers, alerted by neighbours worried because they had not seen her for some time, broke into her home in the Paris suburb of Epinay-sous-Senart to extricate her.

How hard is it to break down a bathroom door in France?

They call it a watercloset because that's about the size of it.

We had an antique glass doorknob on the bedroom door of our apartment. One morning, I accidentally pushed the thing trying to shut it, and it broke in two. One part fell into the other room, the other part into the bedroom. It was locked. Fortunately, I had a phone in the room and was able to call my in-laws to come and get me out. It hadn’t been all that long since I’d had a bad reaction to some new medication and had to call them. - How embarrassing! It did teach me that modern doorknobs work best for me.

Fortunately for her it's France. So nobody noticed the smell.

If that were me and it was an apartment I would have plugged the tub and flooded the place before the end of day 3.

Bing. Bing. We have a winner! Great idea!

How often would you or an elderly woman take a nail file to the bathroom?

Wow they have really solid and secure bathrooms in France. It’s called “take a nail file and push the door latch in.”

That was my first thought, too. Good grief, don't just sit there and contemplate your navel. Take a nail file, tweezers or scissors to the lock. Bash the door down with the toilet seat. Flood the room so it'd leak to the downstairs' neighbors. All the more reason to have a window in the bathroom.

So instead of helping, the neighbors asked the government to do it?

LOL! That brings back memories. I forgot all about those old style doorknobs- especially the glass kind. I can remember trying to put the one end back on without knocking the other end with the pole back through the door. There were times I had to use a knife or screwdriver or some other makeshift item to get in or out of a room.

I had a nose and throat surgery that left me unable to eat anything for 3 weeks. For the first 4 days, I could barely tolerate the pain of drinking water or even taking the pain meds (liquid cocaine). Lost 21 lbs and while an effective weight lost plan, not one I would recommend.

That works out to 7 lbs per week on average. Assuming that continues at the same rate and figuring my fat stores prior, I could have easily lasted 10 to 12 weeks. After that, I would have been real trouble.

at night-time tried to call for help by tapping on piping, police said.

But neighbours in the apartment block said they thought someone was doing home repair work and launched a petition to find out who it was and have it stopped.

Yep. That's modern western culture.

Pop the hinges off the door or kick the sheet rock out. Most walls are very thin.
