Recently a diary about the actual facts in the Liverpool bombing of the time has been published - "Merseyside's Secret Blitz Diary" gives a personal account of Liverpool at war.
It features the entire secret diary, exactly as it was written, with many photographs from the Daily Post and ECHO archives.
Mr Johnson, then in his early thirties, from Crosby, knew the newspaper reports he submitted would be subject to the censor and that the truth would not appear in the papers.
He tapped out the true story of the terrible massacres and bombings he had seen when he returned home, filing them in a grey folder entitled 'Air Raid Records'.
After being posted to France with the Royal Navy, Mr Johnson died after suffering from dysentery.
But his journalist son Arthur Johnson Jnr - who never saw his father - hung on to his memory through the diary.
This showed how unreported the bombing was in one of the major targets outside of London - Liverpool, home of the Western Approaches Command - the sea lifeline into England.
