There was that sound. The sound of sometimes no words, just the sound of the ball park, or a bat and then he'd growl out "fow-ul" and give us time to mentally update our scorecards. Dave was the sound that hooked me on baseball in the 50's. The sound of our team (then the Rainiers) coming late at night, muffled from a transistor radio and a pillow when my parents thought I was sleeping. Few broadcasters today bring that simple magic to a game.

"Griffey swings, belted DEEP to right field, going, going, GONE! Get out the mustard and rye bread, Grandma, it's a Grand Salami!"

One of the great voices in baseball. The players would rather hear him call their latest exploits than see them on tape. RIP Dave, you will be missed.

He called a game better than any other broadcaster I ever heard.

I listened to him call the Mariners for hundreds of games. He was truly the best ever.

Niehaus was really something; baseball fans who didn’t get the opportunity to hear him call a game missed out. Winning or losing, a fast paced barn-burner or a 15 inning snooze-fest, he made the game magic. I used to travel a bit so I got the opportunity to listen to local broadcasts in a number of other media markets, not one could compare - I always thought, “Who are these guys - they haven’t got a clue.” His voice will forever be embedded in my mind. And around here, people that aren’t even baseball fans are pausing to remember Dave.

Dave has been a part of my summers and life since 1977. My Dad would sent me audio tapes of Mariner games when I was in the Army and I would listen to them over and over.
