Can anyone recommend some good books of the post-apocolypse-America genre? I read a couple of books that have piqued my interest on the subject.
I'm looking for some books that don't encompass zombies or 26th century steam engine building puritans.
Thanks in advance.

The best one out right now is “One Second After”. Well researched and will make you think of things you may not have before.

Heinlein's “Farnham’s Freehold”. (1964) Seminal iconography of the genre's conventions still echoes today.

The best one out right now is One Second After. I was going to make the same suggestion. Get it. Read it.

EARTH ABIDES—George Stewart
ALAS, BABYLON—Pat Frank
These two books reveal the current crop of zombie apocalypse books as the utter garbage they are. After you’ve read those, you can move on to what I consider the great novel of post-apocalypse America...
A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOVITZ—Walter M. Miller, Jr.
I don’t want to muddy the waters with too many suggestions. People should read these ones. The Miller influenced one of my first published short stories, but I think one can objectively note that it’s considered a classic.

John Ringo's The Last Centurion. Except for the assumption that Hillery is president at the time of the collapse it reads like today's headlines. Best read I have had in a long time.

Hard to beat the old classics, “Alas, Babylon,” “Earth Abides,” “Maleval,” “The Road,” if you want to stay away from aliens (”Farnham’s Freehold”, an otherwise good read) and supernaturalism (”The Stand”, one of King’s best).

I enjoyed “The Descent” although it dragged in the middle a bit.
Congratulations on proper spelling of “piqued”. I feel like banging my head on a desk when I see how it is usually spelled.

I read Patriots. Pretty interesting, although his writing style is a bit clumky.

I wanted to seek treatment for manic depression after reading "The Road" by Cormack McCarthy. OMG that was dark.
Also, one of my favorites is "Judgement Day" by James F David. Not necessarily TEOTWAWKI, but is about a group that discovers anti-gravity and a dictatorship in America.

Moonview Trucker. It's a paradoy of space operas.
From the description: Dex Doxroy isn't ready to stop driving. But Moonview says it's the law. After an accident in space, an independent freighter pilot and veteran of the War for Habitat Independence (WHI) resists the Moonview Government's attempt to revoke his license. He takes off in his rig for the trade routes to reconnect with his war buddy and wingman, Buster. Pursued by McNiff, a self-promoting administrator, Dex confronts the administrator, his retirement, and his continued existence.
