I agree Rove is a stratagist. It’s an intellectual game with him. He cares less about the future of the country than he does about personally winning the game of politics.
His strategy is to be conservative on defense and liberal, or at least Democrat light, on social issues.
That way he can triangulate the American voters.
Hey conservatives you may not like all my positions on social issues but I’m not as bad as the Dems and I’m way stronger than them on defense.
Hey moderates and independents, you may not like my positions on defense but I’ve got lots of federal money and programs to give you and I can do it without bankrupting the country.
Rove is the worst kind of narcisistic, arrogant, egomaniac, who beguiles and subverts principled leadership with wit and charm and steals their principles from them. That’s why Dick Cheney didn’t get along well with him. Dick could see through him.
The principled way forward is the Reagan method. Maintain your conservative principles and sell them to the public as what is in their best interest. Convince them that conservative values are the only ones that will promote maintainable prosperity and safety.
