Any direction would be apparent direction. If it is a jet contrail, it’s apparent motion would be mostly vertical, it’s actual path would be mostly horizontal to the earth’s surface.

Here’s the flight path of one jet that’s been offered as a possibility as far as direction and time:

Then why doesn't the contrail originate to the east of LA? How many active radar systems do you suppose exist in southern CA? Not one has reported an aircraft traveling through their airspace at that time and location?
