Mother Madness

Unless you've been living on another planet, you know that we have endured an orgy of motherphilia for at least the last two decades. Movie stars proudly display their baby bumps, and the shiny magazines at the checkout counter never tire of describing the joys of celebrity parenthood. Bearing and rearing children has come to be seen as life's greatest good. Never mind that there are now enough abandoned children on the planet to make breeding unnecessary. Professional narcissists like Angelina Jolie and Madonna want their own little replicas in addition to the African and Asian children that they collect to advertise their open-mindedness. Nannies are seldom photographed in these carefully arranged family scenes. We are to assume that all this baby-minding is painless, easy and cheap.

Today's bible of child-rearing is "The Baby Book" by William and Martha Sears, which trumpets "attachment parenting." You wear your baby, sleep with her and attune yourself totally to her needs. How you do this and also earn the money to keep her is rarely discussed. You are just assumed to be rich enough. At one point, the Searses suggest that you borrow money so that you can bend your life to the baby's needs. If there are other caregivers, they are invisible. Mother and father are presumed to be able to do this alone—without the village it takes to raise any child.

yea and let’s see all those “stars” with their hands in the toilet flushing down little baby doos. Oh wait, I forgot...that isn’t done anymore because of toss away diapers. Well, let’s see them get food spit on them cause the baby doesn’t like peas. Let’s see them juggle one toddler while juggling the baby and putting them into the car so that they can get all the errands done in one day while they have the ONE CAR. Oh wait...they have drivers. I forgot.
Let’s see them go to the store like Sears or one of those other places and buy their outfits for the kids...oh wait...they buy designer clothing...I forgot.
They all make me SICK. Phonies to the max.

I think she accidentally made a few salient points, but of course, being a progressive fool, comes to the completely wrong conclusion. We picked up "The Baby Book" and I was a bit horrified by the theory of Attachment Parenting. We don't follow the parenting advice in the book, but the medical and developmental information in it is still good.

Of course, she also had to get her shot in at Sarah Palin. Yawn. So predictable, these feminist commies.

Have I really missed anything?

Not really. Her books are not that good and her poetry is hideous.

There are 2 kinds of liberals: the crunchy granola moms who follow Dr. Sears and permissive parenting. They want to be just like the Amazon tribes and don’t want to do anything to hurt anyone’s self-esteem.

And then you have the nasty bitter anti-child elitist snobs because kids will mess up their designer clothes and are responsible for global warming.

it's about mothering as appropriated by lesbican fembots which thus precludes fathering as an issue and when a male does pop out then the focus is on emasculating him in his upbringing

and it works...just look at the effete offspring

It was an early promotion of female promiscuity--by a woman, no less.

It was also an exposure of what the New Left viewed as "liberated" (instead of feminists demanding men be better behaved), and ultimately an attack on 'traditional' values which has been a contributor to the mess we have, socially, today.

That you found it "totally gross" is a testament to your character and to be applauded.

“It was an early promotion of female promiscuity—by a woman, no less.”

My 2 older sisters and I hid it from my mother when we were in high school. We thought it was too racy for her. I think we were a little naive. I doubt she would have gotten past the first few pages before throwing it in the trash. She was a reading specialist.

Thank you. I opted for a traditional life. Husband, kids, etc. Guess I was born conservative. I’m really glad, I have a family around me, and as I shuffle into old age, my life has been good. I see so many bitter old women with nothing to show for their lives, and I do feel sorry for them. They were sold a bill of goods and they bought it.

“Don’t be a bitter old feminist. Actually, it’s good advice for guys, too.”

“Bearing and rearing children has come to be seen as life’s greatest good.”

actually, it is

You see, if you work, even if you make monuments that will last centuries, eventually they turn to dust.

But to bear a child means you have "produced" someone who will live forever in eternity

and as for raising a child: what we do for a child is what we do for God. What better deed for a person to do but to "give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless"...too often liberals interpret this as doing good for strangers, but for many of us it means sacrificing for our own family, with love.

the "village" of the African proverb means the village composed of the loving extended family.

It was Hillary who uses it to justify socialism, child care, and a child free careers for mom.
