SALEM The jail may be gone, but the criminal activity lingers.
A waitress at the new restaurant at the Old Salem Jail is accused of stealing more than $1,000 worth of meals and services last month.
Shane Andruskiewicz and Alberta Spezzaferri, managers of Great Escape Restaurant, told police Tuesday that the waitress waited on tables and then entered the payment as "manager comp," meaning the entire check is written off.
From Oct. 8 to 30, managers found nine different instances when the waitress entered payments as comps. The comps ranged from $60 to $281.
Managers told police they never gave permission for the waitress to use the comps. They also don't know if the waitress pocketed the money or provided the meals for free.
The managers gave police copies of the nine receipts for evidence.
Patrolmen Gil Priddy and Theodore Pierce plan to interview the waitress.
Great Escape, at 50 St. Peter St., opened its doors in September after seven months of planning and construction in the brick building that housed offenders in the county until 1991.
The restaurant has a prison-themed interior complete with jail-cell bars, a chain-gang mural and a menu featuring some dishes named after famous criminals.
Heard it's kind of expensive so maybe customers get robbed regularly. The old Salem Jail.
I have read that the old jail is supposed to be very haunted.
The Philadelphia precinct jails I had to service were the dirtiest environment I’ve ever been in (and I grew up on a working farm!). The offices the cops worked in had never, ever, been cleaned. There were four inch piles of dust bunnies under their desks. The cells were similar, but with a crust of dried urine, and stains of feces on every surface up 12 feet from the floor. Only evil, depraved people would work in such an environment! I visited those two jails in one day, and have refused work from the Philadelphia Courts since.
The thought of a restaurant in such a place makes me ill.
