That happened to me to. they even automatically charged it for the yearly subscription (when I did not requested!). Even when I cancel them, they were still bugging me with renewal notice! Thank God I have something better!
Norton’s confused. It’s actually Norton ITSELF that belongs in the junk pile, but the program’s written by Pakistani monkeys with cognitive issues, so you have to cut them some slack.
Norton sucks. Axe it and get NOD32 (subscription) or Avast (free). I used to recommend AVG, but their new versions are just ad vehicles, and a massive PITA.
Symantec’s tech support is worthless, and they still owe me money for the rebate they refused to honor and the subscription service they cheated me out of. Some versions of their software are notorious for being impossible to remove using normal techniques.
I dumped Norton’s a long while back myself and got others away from it. AVG does OK for me and I know lots of people like it. However I run Sunbelt Software Vipre on all of mine and have used it to cleanse some nasty viruses of client’s systems with good success.

See. There’s your problem.
And I’m not being smart alec or facetious. Norton is worse than useless. Outlook is just as bad. Between Outlook and IE, they are conservatively estimated to be the cause of at least 80% of spam worldwide. Add XP and it’s closer to 100% cause of spam and malware worldwide.
Getting rid of Norton completely, removing Outlook and using something like Thunderbird will fix most of your problems. As for the remaining malware problem, unless you dump XP it will continue.
Thanks. I’ll try it.
Norton is like a my uncle bob...big.. bloated and using up to much of my resources....goto download.com get AVG 2011 free
and sit back and enjoy your day!
I disabled the spam filter on mine. I preview my email with MailWasher anyway, so I don’t need it to filter spam.
Other posters have already named most of my favorites...
That's the truth.
I tried to uninstall it on my Dell some yrs. ago.
I got so many 'can't find a Norton file' when booting I finally reformatted the drive. Only way I could get rid of the scattered files.
And I had gone through the registry, etc.
