IMMIGRATION ... The AWOL issue?
Nov. 3, 2010 | Me

I am not seeing much coverage of how/why positions on immigration affected the seismic Conservative message yesterday.

I realize that of course, economics and health care refor are paramount. But I would have thought that immigration was at least as significant, since absorbing the expanding cost for undocumented's is part of the economic and health care crisis.

No one is even mentioning how urgent this issue is.

If they pay taxes & contribute to help our nation be better, then let them say. Final thoughts though on U.S. involvement in 1866. It would be just to say that the main reason we threatened France with war in 1866 by showing how many U.S. troops we had which resulted in the French leaving Mexico was more to do with our interests than Mexico’s interests. France during that time was militarily powerful, having taken Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos (French-Indo China) gradually (all 3 became French colonies by the 1880s) & if the French had taken Mexico, then our interests may have been threatened next by France. Napoleon 3 was smart in withdrawing the French from Mexico, because France would’ve lost the war with the U.S. & Napoleon 3 understood that the French had interests elsewhere in the world.

Did the U.S. help Benito Juarez in the Juarez-Maximilian civil war which continued from 1866-1867? If we did, then we should not have & been a neutral observer in that matter, though it makes no difference now. Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian intent to help Mexico was indeed honorable & he wanted to be a good Emperor of Mexico, but he didn’t understand how to get most Mexicans to support him. After the French left, Napoleon 3 urged Maximilian to abdicate, but he wanted to continue being the Emperor of Mexico. Empress Carlotta tried to get the French & Austrians to help Maximilian, but again, both refused as they didn’t want to go to war with the U.S. President Benito Juarez won in overthrowing Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian in 1867 mainly because more Mexicans sided with him over Maximilian. Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian is viewed with neutrality by most Mexicans, but he is revered in Austria.

The history here shows going back to 1866, is how American policy with Mexico has been to help them, even if we get little in return from Mexico. The U.S. has a high unemployment rate, but Mexico won’t help our unemployed. We have done alot to help Mexico economically in many ways. American tourist $ have helped Mexico for many years. American automakers & other American companies have helped Mexico economically, incl. engineering work-Mexican engineers have helped in build American automotive industries in Mexico & factories which make Kodak cameras-many Kodak cameras are made in Mexico & brought here.

Many Republicans & some Democrats may talk about ending illegal immigration from Mexico, but don’t expect our almost 1 way street in helping Mexico to end. Most illegal aliens from Mexico, send their money back to help their families in Mexico, which is alright in that you have to help your family. Finally it has been my observation that some Americans feel that we have a duty to help Mexico economically because we must be good neighbors with them. This duty whether they realize it or not can be traced back to 1865.
