Honestly it was nowhere near as important as the economy. Yes I know there is some relation but outside the deep Southwest it was far from the number 1 issue, I feel the same way most people here do about it but on my list of what’s most important to fix, it’s well behind the economy, taxes, the Mideast, healthcare...
Immigration was deliberately suppressed by the MSM, because they knew it was a loser for democrats. Republicans were sitting on their lead and too timid to bring it up.
Now the election is over, and many new Republicans in the House are strong advocates for controlling ILLEGAL immigration and securing the borders.
In about a year, immigration and defense/national security will again become top issues, after Obama and Herry Reid, (who owes his relection to the illeagl alien lobbies, like SEIU and the unions in the gaming and resort industry) bring up a flock of amnesty legislation and a national security incident occurs like the recent ones that were fortunately thwarted.
Obam has to bring up the amnesty issue to put timid Republicans on the spot because their history on illegal aliens is not good, and because he needs to polarize on this issue for his reelection. That’s why we have to keep the pressure on these newly elected Republicans who said they were going to listen to the people.
Obama’s only hope for reelection is to rally hispanics, blacks, gays, and all the fringe elements, and to hope that the Republicans put up another McCain or Dole, a not unlikely possibility.
Conservatives cannot allow Liberals to go on over ‘sensitizing’ Americans about Immigration reform and unnecessarily emotionalizing the whole thing
The cold hard facts regarding undocumented’s cost to taxpayers (stated clearly and consistently) must dominate the dialog on economics, taxes, health care reform, etc. No Presidential hopeful ought to even be considered who cannot/will not express him/herself clearly and consistently on this issue.
Also, there was a resounding victory by that guy Barletta in northeastern Pennsylvania over incumbent Democrat Kanjorski. Barletta's only real claim to fame in terms of political experience was his track record as mayor of Hazleton -- when he implemented a rigorous enforcement program to keep illegal aliens from even renting homes in that town.
It's also worth noting that illegal immigration has lost some of its appeal as a major issue simply because there's a perception (maybe accurate) that the numbers of illegal immigrants in the U.S. have declined in recent years as the economy collapsed.
Then, for sure more illegal’s will arrive.
I live in Ohio and I am ALWAYS surprised at the increasing number of them everywhere I go now. It has not abated.
I need to fault you here. You are fortunate because you are not in an area that has (yet) been touched by illegal immigration, but it is not limited to the southwest and it is coming your way.
Illegal aliens are a curse all over America, not just the southwest - Virginia, Georgia, Detroit, Colorado, Long Island, Iowa. You reflect the establish view, because immigration does not affect them in their gated communities or in their upscale suburbs. They (and apparently you) see no problem when it is not touching you, and can afford to be "compassionate".
You don't experience the overcrowded, trash-strewn homes next to yours with 10 vehicles in front. Your children don't go to a school where English is a second language. Your hospital isn't closing because it can't afford to service the illegal aliens overwhelming it. Your carpenter neighbor who earned a good living is now out of a job because it was taken over by illegals. The gang graffiti isn't showing up on your fence. You don't have to swerve to avoid the 50 day laborers at the nearby 7-11 swarming around your wife's car. Your home isn't unsellable because your neighborhood is loaded with the foreclosed homes previously tenanted by illegal aliens. You don't see your property and local taxes soaring to provide the social services for uninvited illegals. You don't wonder why the incidence of bedbugs and tuberculosis and whooping cough are escalating.
Like all those nice Germans who didn't know all those nasty things were going on nearby because it hadn't (yet) affected them, you are with the democrat AND Republican elites who don't see illegal immigration as a problem.
Continue to ignore it and let the Obamas and Reids and McCains have their way and it will soon come to you.

I’ve noticed a decline in my area of the Northeast. When the housing market collapsed and contractors stopped building new homes, a major source of employment for immigrant laborers disappeared.

It looks like amnesty for illegals will never get passed.
No way will it pass a GOP House and the Senate only tightened up against amnesty.
We might actually get more money for border security, but without a GOP Senate, Barack Obama will continue to give back door amnesty to illegals.
With the election of Brown in California, illegals will continue to have sanctuary for their crimes and Brown will be giving illegals driver’s licenses and in-state tuition.
Fault me all you want, actually I’m unemployed...so yeah illegal immigration is far down my list.
We can't afford another population of able-bodied wards of the state hanging around our necks like a boat anchor.
It is just those types of bigoted statements that have no business coming from a supposed Republican. Either the GOP shows such people as yourself the door or we become a permanent minority party.
Hispanics may not sell themselves to the highest bidder, but you can count on them to consistently vote for the party of wealth-spreading.
I am making an objective observation drawn freely from the MSM representation of American minorities. The MSM representation is something these minorities accept and emulate. If YOU want to challenge THAT, then you are welcome to. (Good luck getting American Minorities to pull the MSM needle out of their arms.)

Illegal aliens & immigration. Honestly, don’t expect U.S. policy regarding illegal aliens from Mexico (yes, they come from other nations too) to change for this major reason-our help to Mexico which goes back to 1865. It doesn’t matter whether the Republicans or the Democrats dominate the Senate & Congress, nor does it matter who are our Presidents have been so far-Democrat or Republican. Let me give you the layman’s history of U.S.-Mexican relations after the Mexican-American war.
If you’re familiar with Mr. Pat Buchanan’s columns, the fact is that we have been helping Mexico since the end of the Civil War. It began in 1865 (around 2 decades after the end of the Mexican-American War) when France was intervening in Mexico & while the French may have had justification to get debts paid by Mexico, Napoleon 3 had ulterior motives, perhaps to colonize Mexico & France had violated the Monroe Doctrine. We had after the Civil War been giving help to Mexico militarily & in 1866, the U.S. military showed France the might it had in the Rio Grande River-showing France 40,000 American soldiers prepared to fight, the French withdrew from Mexico fearing war with the U.S.
Within a year, Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian (he was from Austria) whose intent was to be a good ruler of Mexico (most Mexicans view Maximilian neither as a hero nor a villain but as Mexico’s last Emperor who tried but didn’t do a good job for Mexico)but who had been put in power by the French was overthrown in 1867 in what could be called the Maximilian-Juarez civil war.
After the French left, Emperor Maximilian just didn’t get most Mexicans to support him & it was a matter of time before Benito Juarez, then to become Mexico’s President overthrew him & in 1867, Maximilian & his generals were executed by firing squad. Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian had good intentions for Mexico but he didn’t understand how to connect to the Mexican people. Unsure if the U.S. helped Benito Juarez in the Maximilian-Juarez civil war.
But going from there to the present, the history of our help to Mexico since 1865 shows that U.S. policy with Mexico isn’t expected to change anytime soon. We have since then given jobs to Mexico (people talk about outsourcing jobs to India, but we have outsourced jobs to Mexico for years-so many American products are made with Mexican labor). Whether our President has been Obama, Bush Jr., Clinton, etc. they have continued a long standing American policy with Mexico. We have done so much for Mexico, but have not gotten much in return & the help has been a 1 way street.
How much help did Mexico give to us militarily during WW1, WW2, the Korean & Vietnam Wars-by just sending us Mexican soldiers willing to fight for the U.S.? These are just things to think about & do you honestly expect any changes to come to the illegal aliens topic, as this all relates to our history of helping Mexico 1st militarily in 1866, but since then economically?
I don’t care one way or another who comes here.
