Strong winds and torrential rain buffeted much of the Midwest Tuesday, sending a tree branch crashing into a Smart Car in the far north suburbs, partially impaling the driver, and spawning tornadoes in the far south and west suburbs.
"She considers herself extremely lucky," said her husband, Todd.

Helen Miller was driving her Smart Car in Lindenhurst when a branch fell 65 feet from an oak tree and pierced her abdomen.
There’s the problem right there. It was a smart car.

Unfortunately a not-so-smart car. Best wishes to the driver for a full and speedy recovery.
“smart car ..... art teacher.. “
This is a horrible accident, with a horrific injury, which I wouldn’t wish on anybody...
But still....
How is one ‘partially impaled’? You are either impaled, or not impaled.
“Maybe next time I’ll get a hummer.” Sounds like the Smart Car has already made her a bit smarter. Cars are for protection during transportation. (Otherwise, ride a motorcycle or a moped.) The protection requires STEEL, something Smart Cars are a bit lacking in.
If it really was a “Smart Car”, why didn’t it jump out of the way?
Like being partially pregnant?
It pulled out early? It only went half way in?

A limb of that size falling from 65 feet would have pierced the roof of the largest SUV. I don’t particularly like Smart Cars either, but have some sympathy. She’s lucky to be alive. Get well soon, Mrs. Miller.
That car looks like it was hit by a train not a tree branch.
We use to live in Lindenhurst when my hubby was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base. Nice place to live.
It means all of her guts didn't fall out and get destroyed...happy now?

Smart cars are nothing more then a tin can with a motor. Not safe at all.
Someone is a bit out of sorts this morning. Nothing I wrote warranted a snarky reply. Or are you always that way?
yah...if you t-bone one of those with a full sized F-150, it ricochets like a 3-ball headed for the corner pocket on a pool table.
Good thing she wasn’t a little bit pregnant too.
