(AP) -- An elderly Oklahoma man landed himself in jail after using bolt cutters to break his prized pooch from the pound.

Instead of paying a $100 fine for not having his poodle on a leash, 73-year-old Edwin Fry of Hydro decided to bust Buddy Tough out. Authorities say Fry drove his lawnmower to the city pound Oct. 13 and broke into the cage with bolt cutters. The pair were intercepted by police.

So, he only had ONE neighbor???

Like I said: “ No, no, the heartlessness credit is all yours.

It was the side stepping of the issue of helping this man that did you in.”

This was a low down dirty rotten trick any way you look at it. Maybe the old guy is senile. No he shouldn’t have tried to break the dog out, but seriously, it’s a small town, the cops knew that he would be out in a few days. FWIW some small towns have a small pound that the cops themselves run (that’s how it is in my town anyway.) My dogs have gotten out on occasion, 90% of the time one of the local cops will just bring them home. Twice I’ve had to go down to city hall pay my fine and go pick the errant pooch up. Once I was unable to pay the fine right away. They still didn’t kill my dog. They waited till the following Friday till I could pay the fine and gave me my dog back. Hell they even let me send over her regular food so she wouldn’t end up with an upset tummy.

Here's a newsflash for you, buddy: maybe the guy's neighbors didn't like him. Maybe even because he couldn't control his dog.

In any case, I'm not interested in your hypotheticals . . . according to the story I posted, the dog was a public nuisance.

This ranks up there with the Tennessee firefighters, as they stood and watched one of their neighbors homes burn to the ground, because they didn't pay a fee or tax...

Boy, we sure are a united country nowadays!

Yeah, the common thread I see is that people think that they can free-load on county’s fire-protection system, and in this case, people think that the guy’s dog should be able to free-load off the dog pound.

Damn. Any judge with common sense and mercy would have let the old dude pay restoration with a promise the dog would not go loose.

That’s what the fines pay for when you pick your dog up from the pound. It’s not freeloading. Fines here are $15 a day and let me tell you even a large dog does not eat $15 worth of food a day ;)

Ah, but how much do you have to pay the ‘stall cleaners’ and such?

How much for using bolt-cutters to cut through (what is presumably) a chain-link fence?

We are talking about a couple of days here not weeks or months. They knew that the old guy wanted his dog back (obviously), they charge fines that more than cover the care of the animal. It’s not freeloading in that the services are in fact being paid for by the owner, and it’s just common decency not to kill the guys dog.

He is being charged for that (hence why he was in jail for a few days) and I assume a fine would be levied for that offense. The punishment for cutting a fence should not include the killing of his pet. Fines and a few days in jail, sure.

We don't know from any of these stories whether the euthanization of the dog was legal. If it wasn't, then this man has a civil case.

But I have to reiterated what someone said up above. That $15/day doesn't just go for food. It goes for the building, the land, the employees, the equipment . . . .

Just imagine if I tried to make up for it somehow. I don’t know, maybe by working for a rescue shelter, or something.

So ONE owner should have to pay for the building, the land, the employees, the equipment? $15 is what they charge here in my town. This guys town charged $100 right off the bat. Kennels don’t even charge that much for a three day stint.

I don’t know what state this guy is in but I know of my own state’s law the pound cannot put an animal to sleep if they know who the owner is, the dog is not dangerous (even then they would have needed a court order unless the dog was shot while in the act of injuring someone) or the dog is not severely injured itself. The only way the pound could have legally put the dog to sleep would have been if the owner had surrendered it, which he obviously did not, or with a court order.

Yes!

That's the part that's missing from the story. Whether it was legal, or not.

Most state laws are similar although I cannot say with 100% certainty that what they did was LEGAL. Even if it was technically LEGAL they should not have killed this guys dog when they knew that he would be coming for it within a few days. It’s called human decency. Fines and jail time was sufficient punishment for what the guy did wrong (letting the dog get loose and then trying to break it out). Killing the dog was over the top and cruel.
