Just watched the new 'Sherlock' series, Episode 1, lady in Pink. Thought I was tuning into the traditional rendition by Jeremy Hines(?) But founf myself watching an updated series, with Holmes & Watson, in contemporary times. Watson just back from Afghanistan with war wounds.
Wasn't campy or or overacted IMO. The upating weas a nice twist, while still remaining mostly true to the core of the stories. Don't want to give any spoilers, but Holmes "cocaine addiction" has been given a "PC update", and the explanation of his personal life, has as well. BNut it was fun seeing Holmes using a computer, cell phone, and texting.
Looking forward to next weeks episode.
Anyone else have an opinion, good or bad?

And I got the impression that Sherlock is more or less asexual from his comments to Watson on this show.
That's also the way his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, described him - as likely to develop an attraction for another human being as an adding machine would be.

This is off topic but Johnny Depp is playing in the new Thin Man movie. Are there any fans of William Powell, Myrna Loy and Asta? Oh sheesh, ya gotta be kidding! Powell, Loy and Asta were great. I hate it when they go back and screw up the classics. Can't they think of anything new? And how, exactly is Depp going to replace Powell? It was the contrast of him doing a classic man's man detective as a breezy bon vivant playboy that mat the Thin Man so great. How can Johnny Depp do that?
And Myrna - cute, sexy and smart. Yum.

I knew nothing of this and while Sherlock mumbles a bit too much, (Basil could always be understood, the benefit of having acted on the stage) I enjoyed this a lot...thank you for letting us know about it.

Can’t be worse with that movie with Robert Downey and Jude Law.

You can watch the episode online starting tomorrow: Thanks for the link. I just tried watching it, but it wouldn't play. I'll try again later today.

I hope they do a better job than they did with the new Sherlock Holmes movie...(Robert Downey Jr. played Holmes, couldn’t be understood, mumbled through the whole movie, had to watch the DVD with captioning on...gross)
Let’s hope they don’t ruin the Thin man, that would be the worst.

everyone has an opinion.....Basil was never allowed to use Doyle’s stories like Brett was.....Brett didn’t understand Sherlock’s soul......no one will ever touch Basil....no one

Which of course is a rewrite of Holmes’es line “it’s a 3 pipe problem”, when Watson returns to their flat and finds Holmes sitting in the dark, smoking, while trying to puzzle out their current case.

Stumbled across it and found myself watching, but just couldn’t stay awake long enough to finish it. Looked interesting though.

Didn’t see it. But there is a precedent for updating the tales. The 1940s Nigel Bruce/Basil Rathbone film series was updated to WWII.

Funny you should ask, hubby & I just watched Shadow of The Thin Man on DVD last night! I love those movies. I hope they don’t update the remake!

I have always been a Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes fanatic but this new show has caught my attention. I was quite surprised. It was very good. I am glad they chose to make it modern day as no one in this universe can make anything that could touch a molecule of a Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes in the Edwardian Era.
I watch very little television. Never attend the theater.
I do study metaphyisics and meditate with eyes raised to the point between the eyebrows for spiritual reasons. I try to live the life of historic saints of all religions. Jeremy Brett reminds me of them.

I have and treasure every “Thin Man” movie on DVD
love Jeremy Brett as the best or only Sherlock Holmes!
But I did enjoy Basil Rathbone before I discovered Brett.
Really liked this new one set in modern day London. Was very skeptical, but it WAS good.

And how, exactly is Depp going to replace Powell? He probably can't. As you point out, those movies were made great by the understated chemistry between Powell and Loy. Depp's quirkiness dominates every scene where he is on the screen -- it is hard to imagine him in this role.
That said -- I nominate Keira Knightley for the role of Mrs.Charles.

The original Study in Scarlet had Watson returning from the Afghan Campaign (the 1800s one) with a bullet in his shoulder. Or was it his leg? Conan Doyle never could decide
