Mulling Mel

No, Mel Gibson has not retired in shame after public problems with a young girlfriend and a 2006 arrest for suspected drunken driving brought the conservative actor many woes. He has emerged intact. Mr. Gibson, 54, will be back in front of the cameras, says friend-of-Mel and fellow actor Jodie Foster. He'll make a cameo appearance as a tattoo artist in "Hangover 2," the upcoming sequel to the Golden Globe-winning blockbuster comedy. Critics already are buzzing that Mr. Gibson's damaged reputation could be healed with a funny role. Filming begins in two weeks.

I think people are realizing that in a world where Roman Polanski walks free—and where nice, sweet, well-liked Matthew Broderick killed a woman and her child in a reckless driving accident he pleaded guilty to, and it NEVER gets talked about—Mel Gibson having a fight with a girlfriend and saying assinine things while drunk doesn’t make him the worst person around.

That's right - not the worst, not the best.

Nope. I’ve never particularly cared for him as an actor, he’s always so over the top, and I just don’t care for many of his movies. I’ve enjoyed some of them, not others. But to be blunt, I don’t look to Hollywood for role models, and I assume they’re all at a lower level of moral behavior until I learn otherwise (usually by accident, since I love movies but care far more about writers, composers, directors, cinematographers than I do actors). As far as directing, I enjoyed Man Without a Face and Apocalypto, but neither is an alltime favorite.

And then there’s the vile Polanski. If they can give him an Oscar, I think we can allow Gibson to continue with his career.

Wow! Hadn’t heard about that one. Matthew must have a publicist that dispenses gold bars to the media.

Mel Gibson is an alcoholic. Until he gets back on the wagon, he’s going to continue with his destructive behavior.

The term ‘actress’ was deemed demeaning to acting females.
So they call them ‘actors’, which somehow makes them even in PC eyes.

Notice how nice they are to point out his political leanings since that is really important to this story.

Well, maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. I’m not in the room with him all the time.

He had a minor accident not too long ago and the police stressed that he was sober and still attending counseling.

He said in an interview that he was bipolar. Kinda makes you wonder if he takes meds. I'd bet not.

Why do they have to call him "the conservative actor"? Are liberal actors ever identified as "the liberal actor"? If they had just gotten through listing a bunch of accomplishments and good things about an actor, would they mention his conservatism then?
