Can you get into the BIOS? Usually that means hitting the "del", F2 or some other key during initial POST.

A very good idea would be to pull the power and battery for at least five minutes and trying again. (if you haven't already done so)

I’ve taken out the battery

And then what? What is the risk? An earlier post said not to do it unless you’re an expert.

I can’t get past the first screen for system restore (see link for details — if you read the link you’ll know pretty much everything that’s happened to me).

I can get to the re-imaging point where it gives me a choice of a file. I don’t know what file to choose.

I can’t get to system restore or safe mode via command prompt

Hope you listened to Rush and have Carbonite!

Carbonite will not help anyone get their hosed PC to boot up. It will only backup data. Not system or OS files that would allow a rebuild of a system.

Try the “surge fix”. Unplug it. Take the battery out. Hold down the Power (on/off) button for 60 sec (clears the motherboard). Battery back in..plug it in..power up. Good luck.

I know this won't help with your current situation but in the future, when this happens, I have a way for you to recover painlessly and be right back in business in under an hour.

Once you get your laptop back up after this episode, download a free program called Macrium Reflect.

This is an imaging program that you can run to create images of your C:\drive at will in about 20 minutes. An image created with Macrium Reflect can be restored to a hosed system like yours and will overwrite the whole drive with all the data and OS files as they looked at the time of the image creation. Taking an image once per week is a good idea. Once per day is even better.

Restoring is as easy as plugging in the external USB drive where you have stored the image file and then booting up the laptop with a rescue CD that you create with the Macrium Reflect program. It launches Macrium from the CD and then restores the image and then reboots. When it reboots...you're done. Takes about 30 minutes. Sweeeet.

Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Now...as far as your current problem...the only way I see to get back to a working state is to find a Windows 7 install disk and do a repair install of Windows from there. It will re-install Windows only and will leave your personal data alone. At least, that's the way it worked for XP. I don't know about Win7 but it should have a similar process. Getting the install disk may be a problem and you'll likely need to take it to a local PC repair shop so they can do this process with one of their disks. Bring any info you have that has your Windows COA number/license number. Usually a 25 digit number that will be needed to activate Windows during the re-install.

At the link you provided, this appears under System Restore:

"...---when I tried this option, the list gave me only 3 restore points..."

Do you also see 3 restore points? If so, pick the latest one and go for it. If there are no dates, pick the one that is last in the list and go for it.

Yes you can...try this at the command prompt:

1. At your command prompt type;   %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
2. Hit Enter
3. This will open the system restore wizard...

Now...it MAY only be necessary to type in rstrui.exe with Windows 7. Try that first rather than the whole string in step 1.

Good luck.

And then what? What is the risk? An earlier post said not to do it unless you’re an expert.

Once you get into the BIOS you can check your hardware configuration. It will tell you what drives, etc are detected. You don't have to make any changes but it will tell us if there is a drive that is not detected.

The BIOS is the program that runs the mother board and interfaces it with the peripherals.

If that part is good then that probably means the hardware is okay and you may have virus.

You can download Malwarebytes - Anti Malware and load it onto a disk or a flash drive that know to be good. You can then change your boot sequence in the BIOS to load that first and use the program to detect any malware.

The flash drive you put in may have had a virus. Don't put it into another PC.

While all this may seem too scary at some point you are going to have to try these things. Your LT is not working now.

If you have vital info on the hard drive you may want to remove it and take it to a PC shop to get the info off.

I don’t see 3 restore points (or any for that matter)

I just get a screen that tells me what system restore is but when I click on the two links I get popups with X’es on them.

I’ve tried %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and
rstrui.exe

They didn’t work

Are you sure it's a K60. Asus does not list a K60 on their support site.

Look under the LT and find out what the exact model is.

What’s an ‘Asus splash screen ‘?

Ouch.
Well...check out the last part of my reply #25. That looks to be your only remaining option.

Then download Macrium Reflect!      =;^)

I have an acer laptop and have done the system restore on mine before. My laptop has a copy of windows on it that is used to reinstall the operating system. I thought I was toast as far as my pics and things that were on the pc. It saved them in a backup file on the c drive so I was definitely glad about that. I don’t know if making the backup file was part of the win7 reinstall or something acer has on the laptop.

I've done a couple of system restores on my Windows XP machine. Look in Documents and Settings and you should see your old user accounts (along with your current user accounts) complete with My Documents and My Pictures for each user.

I am guessing you have XP.

You have to reboot with the original windows disk.
You will get an option that says Install or Repair.
Click repair

Maybe you can get it from there with that as enough of a clue. If not, write back and I will get you the full instructions.

The key part is you need to boot from the original disk.
