He did all his own stunts, at age 55 in "The Poseidon Adventure," An incredibly physical movie.
This in a time before Eastwood, Stallone and Willis doing stunts in their 50s.

He even played Vince Lombardi in a made for TV movie not long after the coach’s death. Did a great job.

Yup, Borgie was one of the greatest. He was a great villain in Bad Day at Black Rock, and Spencer Tracy kicked his arse with one hand....LOL....what a great scene with two great actors.

I remember reading that Ethel Merman claimed when she divorced him that he was into wife-beating.

I never forgave him for beating up Frank Sinatra. :)

In the move S1M0NE, the giant screen that Pacino uses to create his perfect actress is populated by Grace Kelly, Maroilyn Monroe, a bunch of others, and Ernest Borgnine!

Not only "McHales Navy." but also his performance as Kirk Douglas's father in "The Viking." Here's a part of that film showing the great actor:

I remember reading that Ethel Merman claimed when she divorced him that he was into wife-beating.Never heard that, and highly doubt it. BUT...
She did write that he would fart in bed and hold her under the covers. If that's her definition of "beating," well, that's her opinion.

“She did write that he would fart in bed and hold her under the covers.”
They call that a “Dutch Oven” in these parts.
