I just assumed he didn’t want the dog and had to kill it himself. Such a heartwarming story. lol.

“Would you trust that vet after this happened?”

Actually, that reminds me of one of my favorite Herriot stories. He was treating an animal at a farm & noticed a sheep in distress. He wanted to go take a look at it, but the farmer didn’t want another bill & said the sheep would just have to take its chances. The farmer walked away for a short time, so Herriot took his chance to administer what he thought was a lethal dose to put it down & then left.

Some time later he was back on the same farm & asked the guy about the sheep. He said it was the strangest thing, the sheep went to sleep for three days & then woke up fine & dandy. Herriot took from that experience that sometimes animals just need relief from the stress of pain to be able to recover. Pretty cool!

The vet used the wrong stuff. Good thing it wasn't the other way around, which reminds me of a joke.

A man takes his dog to the vet and says, “Doc, I want you to put my dog to sleep”. The vet get a syringe and gives the dog a shot, dog immediately slumps over dead. The man wraps him in a blanket and says “Do you think he will stay asleep until I get to Abiline where my son lives? This dog really hates to ride in the car”. (I;ll admit it isn't a very funny joke, it is veterinary humor)
