Stupid question re "Yellow Dog" Democrats
Self | 10/12/'10 | Zionist Conspirator

Posted on 10/12/2010 3:42:30 PM PDT by Zionist Conspirator

Believe it or not, even in the age of Obama and Pelosi there are still "Yellow Dog Democrats." Incredible.

Why don't these "conservative" "I'm not like the national Dems" Dems just start their own party? Evidently they can never forgive Mr. Lincoln for kicking their fannies, but that doesn't explain why they insist on being fully affiliated with the national Democrat party.

Any thoughts?

The term means they would rather vote for a yellow dog on the Democrat ticket than any Republican. I heard a story about another old Dem that supposedly “hated blacks” but if Jesse Jackson was running on the Democrat ticket against any Republican, they would vote for Jesse.

I don’t think they want to think or be challenged to change or see things the way they are. It is infuriating sometimes. But otherwise, most of them are good people.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the clarification, and I mean that sincerely.

Anyone from the South would have understood immediately.

Well then, not being from the south I'll just quit the thread.

You are right. Yellow Dog and Blue Dog are not the same. Blue Dogs took that nickname to differentiate themselves from the liberal Democrats in the party. In my opinion, it is used to “fool” the old time dems (and yellow dogs) AND keep conservatives voting for them, thereby preventing them from supporting Republicans. I don’t know what “Blue” means though.

The term means they would rather vote for a yellow dog on the Democrat ticket than any Republican.

As I am well aware. Thus my starting this thread.

I want to be very careful here, and I don't want to come off as some horrible person who insults people he doesn't know, but what you have just described is not a "good person."

Ignorant maybe but if you don’t know them you wouldn’t understand. I don’t agree with that attitude and I shouldn’t have to tell you this. Obviously, I am not helping your undertanding so I will go away. If you find the answer, let us all know. Thanks!

I posted my question because I was hoping someone would answer it here. If I had the answer I wouldn't be asking my fellow FReepers.

I apologize if my previous post was offensive. But that's the way I see it.

I just saw an ad for Raj Goyle in Kansas touting how this democrat votes with the Republicans 80% of the time, and sponsors legislation 89% of the time - but the puke will still vote for Pelosi as speaker, I bet!

The “I’m not a democrat” democrats are liars. Just ask Bart Stupak.

The dog type rats are often about the same animal as RINOs, but have selected party affiliation based on the perceived weakness of the expected opposition or knew ahead of time they would lose a primary.

I'm sorry, but you don't know what a "yellow dog Democrat" is. See my post 14.

And no one has even attempted to answer the question: if they can't be Republicans, why don't they at least start their own party? Why is great-great-grandpappy's honor not besmirched by Nancy Pelosi the way it is by Lincoln's party?

Back in the 1980’s, Hughes Rudd of CBS/ABC did call conservative democrats “Yellow Dogs.” I believe he did recount the etymology of the term — however I thought it was clear that he was referring their ideology, and not that Reagan’s victory over Carter was so overwhelming that even the democrats who would have never voted Republican voted for Reagan.

By the 1990’s they were called “Blue Dogs.” I took the blues to be a somewhat more moderate version of the yellows.

I thought there was a modern art painting of the name “Blue Dog(s)” around that time.

The rules basically force a 2-party system. In order to get committee assignments they have to vote for one candidate for Speaker or the other. Thus Bernie Sanders, Joe Lieberman, et al. are Democrats, even if they didn’t run under that label.

I grew up in the South, descended from a long line of Southerners.

My opinion on that question is that, if they were concerned and interested enough in politics, and if they were clear-eyed enough to really see what is going on, then great-great grandpappy's honor would be the least of their concerns. They wouldn't be forming a new party, they'd be conservative and primarily voting Republican. They'd be part of, or at least sympathetic toward, the Tea Party.

Again, that's my opinion. I'm as Southern as you can get. My family has lived in the South since before the Revolutionary War. I had family members who wore Confederate gray. My parents probably voted Democrat most of their lives.

I've voted primarily Republican since I was first eligible to vote; my first vote in a Presidential race was cast for Ronald Reagan. I don't care which party was on what side in 1865. I care about what is happening now, and six months from now, and two years from now, and five and ten years from now.

I think about politics and policy and such things. I don't believe most Yellow Dogs do think about those things, much. They think about what's going on in their own little world and how the Braves and the Falcons and the Dawgs or the Gators or the Tide are doing. They remember what Daddy or Grandaddy or Uncle Bud or whoever told them about politics and politicians. They remember the local sheriff back when they were a teenager and how he was known by half the county as "Uncle" and how he helped them get out of a ticket or get home when they were "just a little tipsy" or how he helped a family member get a license without all that botheration- and he had a big "D" after his name on that ballot. Politically, they live in the past.

Why don't Blue Dog Democrats form their own party? Because, if they did, they would lose the votes of the Yellow Dogs.
