I have a t-shirt that says “Jesus Saves”. It’s part of my religion. Am I good to go?

Yeah good luck with that.

I’ve taught high schoolers. If you don’t want total war, you have to pick your battles

If you or the school are not in control you have already lost the war and don’t even understand that............

I’m sure there is a balancing test here. The state interest in not allowing a teacher to work nude is quite a bit bigger than not allowing a student to have a small stud in her nose.

“Charge her parent with child abuse!”

I don’t find it offensive or distracting at all. This is silly....

Yes, you need to be in control of disruptive behavior, and the students need to know it. A tiny hole in a girl's nose disrupts nobody. It's one thing if the school has uniforms or a strict dress code--in that case, they could have the girl cover the stud with a band-aid or something during school hours (which was my private high school's policy). You talk about control--if you ask me, a school that grossly wastes time and energy kicking a girl out of school and gets itself in a big legal stink over something as trifling as a nose stud does not strike me as having a grip. There are much better ways to deal with minor dress code issues, especially when a student's religion is concerned.

There's a difference between setting reasonable boundaries and attempting to harshly micromanage absolutely everything a teenager does and wears. The latter isn't going to benefit anybody in the long run.
