Good hunters must have a certain empathy with their prey. It is hard to hunt well unless you have an understanding of your prey's motivations. A great many hunters that I know have this sort of empathy, and they know that life and death are inseparable in the natural world. A respect for your prey is a serious part of most hunters mindset. Their is no satisfaction or triumph in outwitting prey for which you have no respect. That is merely like the workings of a slaughterhouse. It may be necessary, but it is not satisfying.
I know this will sound rather alien to you, but it is a serious part of hunting culture in the west.
