In defense of The Beastie Boys, all of their albums have been released to critical acclaim and generally very good sales. More importantly for what seems to distinguish rock music they play their own instruments on several of their albums. Their last album was entirely instrumental (and quite good).
With that said, from the very beginning this should have been called The Popular Music Hall of Fame.

from the very beginning this should have been called The Popular Music Hall of Fame. That would not explain some of these guys, none of whom were either as popular as others of their time, or whose music would be termed 'popular':
Leonard Cohen, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The O'Jays, The Dells Del Shannon, Jimmy Reed, Hank Ballard

"Sabotage" is my all-time favorite music video.
