VANITY: What kind of TV to buy -- ours broke!

The volume control, which has been iffy for a year, finally quit working at all on our old "little" HD TV in the living room. We need a new TV rather quickly, and I am overwhelmed both by the offers around online AND the desires of certain young family members.

This should be in the 40s, inchwise, great quality so we don't have to buy one in the near future again, and good for watching movies, TV, sports, Netflix/other computer applications, and serious video gaming. Basically everything!

What would you get, or what have you recently purchased that you like?

For you and all the other “TV IS A WASTE OF TIME. GET RID OF YOUR TV” people here...I ask why. (And this is not a personal attack, by the way - just a question/observation.)

Why not have a tv? Used properly, you can get a lot of information from it. It’s like the internet. You choose to view/read websites that are worth your time, and skip those that aren’t. TV is the same.

The other night, my son and I watched a show about how wild rats survive and how rats “learn”. He is still talking about it, and applying what he learned with our pet rats... we made a maze with landmarks, tested them on their memory, etc. He’s 4. We also watch Andy Griffith as a family once and a while, as well as “How It’s Made” which shows how common items we use every day )and some uncommon items) are produced.

I ask again: how is some TV not worthwhile?

I have found through experience, that the quiet of a house without the sound of a TV benefits a more contemplative and undistracted environment for my personal growth. If I were to watch TV for just 2 hours a day, that is 14 hours that could not spent studying, reading, working on projects, etc...

It is a personal choice.

Part of the problem with TV is the leftist bias and historical revisionism. I choose to not support that. I can get whatever information I want, from the same TV shows on YouTube, and I have full control over it.

TV is a time sink, in my experience. I accomplish much more without one around, even if it's just on in the background (like I dealt with when living with people that just had to have TV).

Fair enough. What works for you may not work for others.

And speaking of an undistracted environment...I accomplished SO much in my life many years ago when I gave up dating for 2 years. It was bliss. Pure bliss. No drama, no distractions from my work and what I love doing. But, now I’m happily married with a kid, and life has changed. I know you are a happy “singleton” from other posts, and secretly, I envy your quiet, calm life sometimes. Enjoy!! :)

That would be my first pick. The LED backlighting consumes less power and displays a snappier picture. The dynamic contrast ratio is several million to one. The picture has “punch”. I like bright, intense colors. The 240Hz refresh rate displays fast moving scenes smoother. I actually prefer LCD screens over plasma screens and there are no phosphors to fade or burn in.

Tell the guy you want one with a “scanning disk”, a spinning disk with a series of holes spiraling toward the center, for rasterization.

We just bought a 46” insignia from best buy, including the extra 4 yr warentee (lot of posts with lcd panel dying after 18 months) it was still less then $1k. Great panel. PS its best buy’s house brand.

I lost my daughter in 04 and in 06 my hubby died. After his death, I left all 4 tvs on because it was absolutely too quiet when I got back. I just could not take that. I am doing better now and can turn all of them off when I leave. In fact, some days I do not even turn the big one and the one in the bedroom on.I keep the one by the computer on just for the noise. I cross stitch, read, crochet when I halfway watch tv. I do not like to just sit there!
