As a matter of fact it was closer to the horizon and now that I think about it, it was probably last december or so.
Mars was in that general area of the sky last December, but my money would still be on Sirius. Sirius just generally looks bright enough to get a person's attention. Outside of the reddish color, Mars just doesn't say "Look at me!", IMO.
