The best esposition of their duties is in the “Retief” series by Keith Laumer.
State department civil service employees that work in DC and at our embassies around the world.

IMO who spend their days:
Ignoring if not out-right working against the wishes of Conservative Elected Officials to include Conservative Presidents.
Sabotaging the US Military at home and abroad directly costing American Lives.. by among other things attending and participating in Command General Staff College.. Identifying the Tigers amongst the sheep and doing all they can to insure American has only Sheep as Military Commanders. Seeing to it the Tigers are shunted off to shovel crap in Louisiana (again laughing about it amongst their friends.)
A collection of vile creatures who while smiling to their faces behind their backs mock the Embassy Security Elements dedicated to protecting their lives.. Laughing at the Marines and Embassy Security as inferiors..
A collection of overpaid elitists the most senior of whom live like Kings and Queens passing out American Tax Dollars to Turd World Country leaders (passing out even more money to first tier nation states). All while they travel about in Armored Chauffeur driven Limousines, Have personal Security, Maids, Butlers and Chefs to cater to their every whim..
What foreign government would deny these handers out of your Tax Dollars any pleasures of the flesh?
A greater collection of scum in one puss filled festering pocket of the Federal Government would be hard to find.
But that's just my opinion.
There are others who would certainly disagree with my optimistic appraisal of those in our US State Department. LOL.

I figured it was like a peace corp the cynical. just a place to snort coke and get laid.
