Okay! Thanks. I’ll check into that. If we the people need weapons to defend hearth and home in the near future, even the kids need something with which the ‘zombies’ can be dispatched from 100 yards+ yet carried comfortably and I ‘lost my M1Carbines in that boating accident and replacements are over $600 each, so this $150 bolt baby looks promising.

I think the M44 is just about the ideal truck or tractor gun. It’s tough and compact; it hits as hard as a .30-06; ammo is cheap (<$.50 a round for Combloc surplus, at least for the time being); best of all, short of running over it you can’t really hurt it, and if by some strange chance you actually do ruin it, replacements are cheap and plentiful (also for the time being).

I was just reading about the carbines. A 36 inch rifle like this Mosi would be the ticket! In 30.06 or .308 is ideal. I think a butt pad would be in order though ... I intend to shoot it regularly at the range if I can acquire or build one. Going to read up on the Mauser now ...

Even the taliban still use the Mosin Nagant!

Indeed, and if not as quick on the second shot as a flip-lever Winchester, the Nagant's bayonet offers a quieter solution to the world's overpopulation problems, as neatly demonstrated by US actor John Wayne.

Mosin or Mauser? That's actually a tough call for me. Before the freak boating accident I had a lot of experience with both. The Mauser is a precision instrument-complex, refined and functional. The Mosin is a durable tool-simple, rough and effective. I'm not a good enough rifleman to notice any difference in accuracy between them. I can put 5 shots in a 6" circle at 100 yards offhand with either one. Surprisingly, I prefer the "fit" of a Mosin 91/30 to that of a Mauser 98. I can get a better cheek weld and it just feels more "natural", somehow. The next guy might feel the opposite; that sort of thing is subjective to the max. But all things considered, both are great guns.

Why not get both of them? ;-)

I’m surprised that more of our choppers are not being shot at with US supplied Stingers - they sure raised the dickens with Russian gunships for a while there.

There are battery life and seeker head coolant shelflife issues with the FIM-92 Stinger that make such a problem unlikely. However, part of our *aid program* to the Muj included a rebuild problem to address those and other issues with the less-capable Soviet 9K34 Strela-3/ SAM7 and 9K38 Igla ground-to-air missile systems.

The Afghanis are now obtaining their MANPADS from other sources, but we certainly did a fine job of educating them as to the effectiveness of the systems and providing them with a cadre of trained and experienced ground-to-air gunners. Thank us very much!

There's been a bit of a price increase lately. I paid $98 for a 91/30 earlier this year. I blame Obama.

Of course, a month later I got a gorgeous, mint-condition 1944 production M44 for $100 because a certain gun shop that will remain nameless did not know what it was and slapped it in the "bargain bin".

I’ve got a couple of those 44’s in the safe for when friends show up hungry, cold, and disarmed. I figure getting them re-kitted is our patriotic duty.

From what we understand some pretty interesting guns turn up in Afghanistan.

My favorite is the WW1 Renault tank they turned up in a Kabul junkyard.

I will snatch it (or three) up if I find a ‘Karbiner’ in good condition for sale.

That's weird, because it's still showing up when I load the page. Do a search on the words Renault tank Kabul and you'll find it pretty easily. They've shipped it back to the US to be restored.

Maybe this one will work:

That's probably for the sniper version. I found it on their website under firearms. Comes with bayonet, cleaning kit, ammo pouches & sling.

This thread is making my man-juices simmer.........LOL

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."
