President Barack Obama, who invoked his own Christian faith recently in seeking to quell anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States, attended church in Washington on Sunday for the first time in about five months.
Obama and his family strolled a block from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church, a place of worship for many of his predecessors, for an hour-long service.
It was one of just a handful of times Obama has gone to church in Washington since taking office in January 2009, and follows opinion polls showing that as many as one in five Americans falsely believe he is Muslim.
Obama's visit came after he appealed for religious tolerance after a Florida pastor's threat to burn copies of the Koran sparked an outcry in the Muslim world and controversy swirled around plans to build a Muslim cultural center and mosque near the site of the September 11 attacks in New York.
"As someone who relies heavily on my Christian faith in my job, I understand the passions that religious faith can make," Obama told a September 10 news conference.
The Obama family never joined a church in Washington. Obama has said it would be too disruptive to the congregation. The White House says he regularly attends services at a chapel at Camp David when spends weekends at the presidential retreat in Maryland.
Obama was a longtime member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago before quitting in 2008 during the presidential campaign amid controversy over provocative sermons by its former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Nah, his motive is not obvious.
The only word that comes to mind is “phony”.
I wonder if they had to cover the crucifixes.
Rare church appearances are indicators that the elections are just around the corner.
So where are their Bibles?
I think some Palestinian was there today speaking about about Israel.
“...and follows opinion polls showing that as many as one in five Americans falsely believe he is Muslim. “
And they are false based on what, Rooters?
Wow. Reuters actually covered this story somewhat fairly.
Of course, they couldn’t resist the “falsely believes he is a Muslim” theme, but otherwise it seems at least an attempt to report the facts. It never seems to occur to them that five times to church in two years MIGHT mean the person isn’t what they say they are.
People who rely on the Christian faith as heavily as O claims usually make a little bit more of an attempt to go to church. And of course, if he asked anyone in any congregation would they rather he stay home instead of “disrupting” them, I’m sure they would all tell him GO TO CHURCH.
Ping for later
Meaning that as many as four in five Americans correctly believe he is one?
Obama sent his special security team in ahead of him and “sanitized” the place first. Like when he gave a speech and had all religious murals and such covered.
The Koran says any Muslim can do whatever it takes to fool the non-believers.
Question is, is America being fooled by this?
Michelle has got to be the worst dressed wife of a president ever. Hideous. And since when are the Episcopalians?
Did they have to cover the crosses or crucifixes again so that he would not feel the pain?
Probably garnered the best response in a focus group.
Somehow that struck me as a bit of a stretch for them too.
