A Dachshund was killed and another was injured Wednesday after a Great Dane and a German shepherd ran onto a neighbor's yard and attacked the smaller dogs, deputies said.

The owner of the Dachshunds, a 38-year-old woman, also was injured. She was treated at a local hospital for bite marks on her left leg, left buttocks and left hand, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

She received 11 stitches, deputies said.

I don’t post the pit bull stories. I seek to dispell the misconceptions about them by revealing that other breeds do, in fact, attack. :-)

The worst part about dog bites is not the stitches, it is the infection that they cause.

As a kid my dad adopted a toy poodle named Tippy. After Tippy discovered that Mom ran the house, she cuddled up to Mom and literally growled or bit anyone who got too close for her comfort. She did however sleep next to Dad after Dad was disgnosed with Type Two Diabetes. A tempermental bu really, we loved her. I remember this time that Tippy got a backed up bladder (poop) and basically had to get it cleaned out. When Tippy didn’t growl at me as I held her I knew she was zonked out. It took a couple days, but soon she was back to her own snappy self.

for some reason her nickname was “Tippy L. Toes, Attorny at Law.” I realize, considering the jokes about female attornys, I guess that’s not too off the mark. She died some years back and it really was depressing.

You’ve convinced me, we should ban all dogs. They are just too dangerous to allow in the hands of average citizens. :-)

A pit bull would be 110 stitches.

1) Large and/or aggressive breed of dog? Check.
2) Running loose without any supervision, often >1? Check.
3) Unrealistic assessment by owner of dogs capacity for and likelihood of violence? Nope, not really.
4) Previous reports of dog(s) running loose and/or acting aggressive? Nope, fence got knocked down.

Two for four.

Aw, thanks!

It was all Swiper's idea..."Mom," He said, "You've reeeeeeeally got to bring the aggressiveness of these other breeds to light."

I’m really sorry to hear Tippy died. It sounds like she had a wonderful life with your family, though. My last dog was a little white poodle named Tango, and I’ve never known a dog with more personality! Unfortunately, he HATED people...

My brother is a veterinarian and knows about being dog bit.
He says squeeze it to make it bleed for as long as you can stand it then scrub with something like Hibiclens. He advises to keep the wound open so you can continue to clean out any infection that is there, even removing the scab to let it drain. The animals teeth pushes the bacteria into the flesh and it is difficult to get it out.

I can imagine! I got bit by a little kitten last year; tiny little teeth, like needles, but the wounds were deep.

Yeah, it happened years ago, but really, she was a treasure for all her snipping. I remember this one thanksgiving and Christmas holiday where she got so many scraps she gained quite a bit of weight.
