Cowlishaw: 'Really dumb' decision at end of half dooms Cowboys
The Dallas Morning News ^ | September 13, 2010 | TIM COWLISHAW

LANDOVER, Md. – Sometimes 60 minutes of football comes down to one terrible decision by the offensive coordinator. Sometimes one chorus of "Hail to the Redskins" after a touchdown is all that it takes.

The Cowboys gave the Washington Redskins seven points on the last play of the first half, and in a game in which both offenses were supremely challenged, that was the difference.

Dallas was a 13-7 loser at FedEx Field on a night when, well, you can't say the Cowboys deserved to win, but they certainly weren't destined to lose.

Not until one ridiculous call, anyway.

In a situation where the only reasonable thing for the Cowboys to do was to have Tony Romo take a knee, Garrett called a pass play. This was 64 yards from the Redskins' goal line and with four seconds to go in the first half.

And instead of heaving a deep ball, Romo threw short to Tashard Choice. Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall stripped Choice of the ball, recovered the fumble and ran 37 yards for Washington's only touchdown of the night.

The game would end with Garrett and the offense getting a chance at redemption – one final shot at the Washington end zone from the 13-yard line. But a holding call on tackle Alex Barron kept Romo's final pass to Roy Williams from meaning anything.

There was some measure of justice in that. You simply don't deserve a shot to win when you make a call as brutally bad as the one the Cowboys called at the end of the half.

Also keep in mind last night, they weren’t exactly facing Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offense.

You do realize that if Barron doesn't hold, Romo probably never gets the pass off.

Probably? No. Possibly. Romo has scrambled and completed many times before. My take is that Barron's choke-hold cost Dallas the game.

Even if he wasn’t sacked, it would have changed the entire dynamics of the play.

Wrong. I think President George W. Bush was a very good president who made a few mistakes — like not defending against the leftist propaganda war that brought his approval down.

I was making a comparison of you claiming to be a Redskins fan but that they didn’t deserve to win. Any team deserves to win if it means the Cowboys lose.

My take, that checkdown was a poor decision for Romo.

He knows there’s only one play left. He knows it’s either down the field or nothing.

Nobody open down the field. Ok. So throw the damn ball away and pack up for half-time.

Why on earth do you checkdown to Choice?! Even if he caught the ball, and ran it, he’s not going to get more than 5-10 yards.

On the bright side, the Cowboys were in the game all the way to the last play. The 49ers (specifically Alex Smith), sucked badly. It’s going to be a loooooong season.

Jimmy’s won more Super Bowls than Wade has playoff victories.

You certainly have a point there. Course, that “great” Pats defense gave up, what, 24 to the Bengirls?

As a Redskins’ fan, it was a brilliant play :-)

The Ravens D, now THAT’S a GREAT defense.

I wasn’t comparing coaches, there is no comparison. I was comparing plays, and I think that play back in 92 was just as bad. I am a Cowboy fan who loves Tom Landry and a distant second is Jimmy Johnson. Wade doesn’t even register. I wanted him gone 2 years ago.

True-—but they gave up more points than the Boys. And by your definition the Chiefs now have a “great” defense because they made a key stop, but gave up more points than the Boys. Sorry, I’ll take Dallas’s D over either.
