A group of miners trapped underground in Chile are to be provided with electricity and some long-awaited cigarettes.

The 33 men have received a power line which will enable them to install electric lights in their refuge 2,300ft below the surface.
After fitting a new compressor to improve air circulation and ventilation in the mine, officials are also granting one of the miners' first requests - cigarettes.
The men, who have been trapped for more than a month, will be sent two packets a day to share among those who want to smoke.
Meanwhile, Chilean authorities are sparing no expense to free the miners with three separate drilling efforts to carve escape tunnels, known as Plan A, Plan B and Plan C.
The latest - Plan C - is a an oil well drill so huge it has taken 40 trucks to carry it to the site of the collapsed gold and copper mine.

The size of a football pitch, the Plan C drilling platform is expected to bore through the rock faster than the other two drills already at work.
It is capable of reaching the miners in 45 days after it becomes operational but just building its platform will take two weeks.
However, because it is so powerful there is an increased risk of rockfalls so rescuers plan to aim it for the very bottom of the mine, some distance away from the other two efforts.
Relatives of the miners cheered and clapped and the trucks carrying parts of Plan C arrived at the site, rolling past their tent camp which has become known as "Camp Hope".

You can’t make this stuff up. If you wrote into a novel that miners trapped for a month would primarily want a smoke, your editor would laugh you out of the room.

They might ask for cyanide pills, unless they manage to get them out soon. It must suck down there

Tough spot for those guys I hope this all ends well for them.
Lights, air circulation, cigs. Only thing missing is an iPad.
Chilly minors? Maybe their moms should send them sweaters.

And cigs for those poor guys?
They should have sent down some Royal Jamaicans.
If we ever manage to perfect robots for labor I thing mining would be the place for them.

I would demand good cigars or a non smoking area. I can handle cigarette smoke as long as I can shower it off, and get clean clothes that don’t smell like cigarette smoke. Short of that, give me a good cigar to overwhelm the stinky cigarette odor.
...maybe a few inflatable sex toys....
