My daughter in law’s mother was born on a boat as her parents were sailing into Cuba for a diplomatic assignment from France. When Castro took over her father was murdered and she was imprisoned and tortured by Castro’s thugs. I understand she still bears the scars for this. A priest helped her escape and she made it to Belgium where she met and married my daughter in law’s father, a Russian man who had also escaped Communism.

Inexplicably, she and my daughter in law are both liberals.
