Good encryption is of course one of the most important measures to protect your data. Ubuntu Privacy Remix contains the well-known cryptographis software TrueCrypt and GnuPG. But the security of encryption relies not only on the security of the used software.
Trojans, Rootkits, Keyloggers can lower or even circumvent the security of cryptographic software.

Ubuntu Privacy Remix (UPR) is a modified live CD based on Ubuntu. Its goal is to provide a completely isolated working environment where private data can be dealt with safely and to protect data against unsolicited access. Networking is intentionally disabled and saving data to mounted volumes is not allowed. The live CD is not installable to hard disk.
I was going to say that you could do this on previous releases of Ubuntu, just this one you can’t install. Also, knoppix can work this way if I’m not mistaken.

Installing UPR on USB drive
The fact that UPR resides on read-only media is an important part of the security concept. The squashfs filesystem is read-only by principle,meaning you cannot permanently install anything on it afterwards within the running system. But there are ways to modify the 'host media' of the live system. Because of this, we recommend you stick with CDs. But there are reasons to install UPR to a USB drive, which should have a physical write protect switch in any case. One possible reason could be the use of UPR on netbooks which do not have an optical drive.
We do not recommend using SD cards, because investigations (see here in german or google translated) have shown that some readers do not obey the write protect switch on SD cards.
You need a USB drive with at least 1 GB. ore is of course possible, but will be of no use because of the write protection - except if you intend to build your own UPR and add more packages. The page above lists experiences with some of the few available sticks with hardware write protection.

I don't get it. How are you going to have any persistent data to work with, or has the term "mounted volume" been abused?
But I am not sure how this OS is useful...guess I need to do more reading and some playing.
My thought was it would be useful for browsing and working with a cloud setup ...like FR.

"Extended TC-Volumes" mean no interference or modification of the function of TrueCrypt or its container format. It solely means some additional scripts are being executed on opening and closing of such containers, like setting symlinks from your (volatile) home directory to the mounted Volume. The "extended TC-Volume" itself is just a normal TrueCrypt container, formatted with the ext3 file system instead of FAT (this means it can only be used under Windows by installing an ext3 filesystem driver).

I finally found a self-starting, self-installing Linux flavor at Bargain Books. Now I just have to take the time...
Downloaded and burned and installed two versions that turned out to be in German. My German’s kind of rusty.
UPR 9.04 r3 multilanguage DVD gives an English choice on loading.
Found Firefox under applications accessories but get no connection.
Still dealing with the learning curve. Will see how it goes, but, then again perhaps not;-{)
They seem to have translation projects going.
I have an IOGear 4X switch...so I have the Remix up on one system and this machine and browser up on the other so I could switch back and forth....However the remix neutered the switch somehow.When they say no connections they mean it.
Local Store had a Glossy cover pub from Linux Identity Office ( Lower Right corner ) Focused on linux Mint and 2 Live CD's 32 bit and 64 bit included...with some very good verbiage describing how to install...how the software update works etc....really excellent.
Think I got it at Microcenter...but you can buy directly from WWW.linuxidentity.com/us/shop...they say on the back.
