Do the Armed Forces recruit disabled people? (vanity)

Posted on 09/10/2010 1:41:45 PM PDT by Ancient Drive

I've noticed other countries have even peg legs in their armies. does our country allow for disabled people to sign up for military service?

No. But, we do have amputees that remain in the service if the injury was sustained in combat or training.

My understanding is that there is a fitness exam that must be passed in order to enlist. To the extent that a “disabled” person can pass, I suppose they can enlist. Otherwise, I wouldn’t think so.

They discourage folks who fail to capitalize the first word of a sentence.

You're out. Illiteracy exemption clause, 1983.

I’m not talking mentally challenged people. I mean physically disabled but other wise able to function normally.

Military people with a peg leg usually got it as the result of their military service.

It could be that the other countries you've seen don't have a very large pool of recruits to choose from, therefore may use disabled people in a non-combat capacity. That can be born out in the fact that some other countries also use kids, and women as combatants.

The perils of war and combat would make it very difficult for a seriously disabled person to participate, as well as endangering the other troops who might be depended on to help the disabled soldier.

Having said that, if they did use people with disabilities in non-combat, support positions, it would free up some of the non-disabled troops to help with the heavy lifting. Or even retirees for clerical and general duties.

I'm 64 but I would re-enlist for that type of support jobs, even though my age might be a hinderance in combat situations.

I don’t know. I was thinking there is an untapped pool of resources with physically disabled people. I know a couple of them who are imho very hard workers and very patriotic. If given the chance they would join up in no time.

Is this something that has just come about? I don't remember active duty amputees during the Vietnam era.

The military has very specific guidelines on what is and is not acceptable. The only person who can answer your question is a military recruiter with his recruiting manual and the affected person in front of him
