Family dog mauls girl
NT News ^ | Sept 11, 2010 | Annie Sanson

A TERRITORY girl is lucky to be alive after she was mauled by a savage dog.

Seven-year-old Meg Croton and her brother Connor, 9, had been feeding their family's dog - an eight-year-old mastiff cross - in their Humpty Doo back yard when the girl was attacked by the vicious hound.

"I tripped on a rock and fell, and I think I kicked his leg," Meg recalled the attack. "And then it hurt very badly and he was on top of me and ripped on my head. "But my brother saved my life."

Alright.

Fair enough I guess.

Although that “qualifier” is a very subjective if not an impossible to know criteria.

I will just have to assign “responsible” the same value as my “never”.

Which too, is a subjective, if not impossible to achieve condition.

I have a question. If you had a dog, theoretically, and something happened to you, (you were killed or died) would you leave instructions that your dog be destroyed since you seem to believe it’s impossible to rehome any dog over say, 6 months old or so?

Just wondering.

Fair question? Only if you haven’t read any of my posts. Including the one I just made to you within the hour.

But, directly, I will answer without evasion, but first background. I am writing this with the hopes that you will actually read it.

We have dogs. I grew up on a farm. My dog, my puppy, presently passed. She was just shy of 13. She was a remarkable show dog with several ribbons. So, in theory, had I preceeded her, she would have remained on the family farm as the Princess of all the four legged. Which she was.

Her pack was large and her dominion vast. I have stated previously, my intent to procure another well documented AKC dog, at the point in time where I am married and have children in and around the age I was, 10, at the time I got my first dog of my own to care and train. I believe that such an animal at such an age grooms responsibility and other such desirable traits.

That being said, if I were again, to precede my pet, all of my family would have to be so removed as well to fall under the scenario you attempt to frame.

That said: No, is my answer.

And for the reasons I have also expressed previously. Since we get hung up on single words, I will highlight them. Unknown, Untrained. Not, or NEVER for families with young children.

My dog, then or future, would be neither, unknown or untrained. A show dog with papers and ribbons who stays where told and does not need to be chained is an entirely different animal, (pardon the pun) than the topic of this thread which we have been discussing.

Second. Do not add content to my posts. It is one thing to lift a word and ignore all subsequent clarifications and expounding remarks, it is quite another to add that which was never said.

To whit: Impossible. Rehome. 6 months. NONE of those words or criteria were stated by me. That is a a trifecta strawman you invented just now, and for whatever purpose other than inquiry you seek. I suggest you disregard such efforts in the future. As I am capable to see right through them and will not fail to confront such tactics. If you remain honorable and sincere, I will always directly, clearly and without mincing any words or playing any games, answer.

In conclusion to my direct “NO” as in NO, I would not leave such instructions. And NO I do not hold the position even indirectly or generically, I remind you that I have stated clearly and on at least 6 different posts, (that would be 600% greater in number than the post with the word never - if you are keeping score) that I have not only supported adult dogs of known and unknown histories for single adult adoption, I have participated in the placement and training of such animals personally.

And of course, a known dog, with significant proofs, may be HIGHLY desirable for families and children. Which of course would be the exact case in my situation.

And, as my posts indicate, those conditions do NOT apply to this article’s situation.

Really?!? A Law Degree? Just like the one "Slow Joe" Biden has? By the way, what was your first language, Esperanto?

Welcome to the after party. The debate is only on going between two of us now, but you are welcome to read up and offer an opinion, or kick back with a beer and serve up some drunken innuendo.

To thine own self, be thou, true.

More likely, given the dog's age and breed, [8 is *ancient* for a Mastiff and he was probably severely arthritic] if she did accidentally kick his leg, it may very well have elicited an extreme pain overreaction.

*If* that was the case, it was a kindness to put him down.

8 years of utterly no signs of aggression really makes me wonder what the dog's physical state was.

I'm glad the beautiful little girl is okay.

And yes, I'm going to nag all FReepers with geriatric dogs to have them examined periodically for joint/arthritis/dysplasia issues...dogs are very stoic and -will- hide their pain until it becomes absolutely unbearable.

I knew a guy who was "proud" of his male Rott's "aggressiveness".

Naturally, I disregarded the guy's foolish boasting and cozied up to the dog.

He was as sweet as could be...until you touched his hind end.

I told the guy to have him checked by a vet ASAP.

He brushed my advice off.

Less than a year later, that decent, sweet 4 year old dog was dead of bone cancer, a disease to which Rotts are highly genetically prediposed.

His "savageness" was little more than a self-protective facade to hide/avoid his agonizing pain.

If even your "young" dog starts behaving in an uncharacteristically shy or aggressive manner, _take it to the vet *first*_ before you write if off as "just vicious".

Fantastic post.

I am sure my dog could have lived another year but she was getting very arthritic and while it broke my heart, hurting her would have been far less loving.

I’ve rescued more adult Dobermans than I can count.

Except for *one*, I hadn’t the foggiest notion of what their “history” was.

The -longest- amount of time it ever took for me to rehab one of them was 30 days and that was only because she had been so horribly abused that she simply was afraid to trust a human touching her.

In her broken mind, “touch” equaled “pain”.

At the end of those 30 days, however, she’d become the typical “Velcro Dobe” whose greatest joy was was to be petted, hugged and cuddled until *I* was exhausted.

Every time I sat down, she would trot over and plop her butt on my feet and await the loving caresses that she’d learned would always happen.

FYI, -no- breed remembers cruelty and abuse like a Dobermann does...yet not a single one ever failed to become a model canine citizen, ecstatically happy, well adjusted and joyfully obedient dog.

Thanks for attempting to condemn all the perfectly nice and deserving adult dogs in shelters to certain death with your “sage advice”.

/s

"The debate is only on going between two of us now,"

You mean you and me? (Never, and I mean never assume you are alone on this forum.)

"...but you are welcome to read up and offer an opinion..."

On what? Dogs? Eaker? You? Law Degrees?
Will there be a quiz?

"...or kick back with a beer and serve up some drunken innuendo.

I don't drink. (Alcohol.) I'm perfectly capable of immuendo without it, but I prefer the single entendre.

"To thine own self, be thou, true."

If you're going to feign erudition by quoting Shakespeare, at least do it accurately.

Polonius:
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!

Not surprising.

They're one of the breeds on the "top 10 aggressive dogs list"

Of all the dogs I've ever encountered [and they are legion] the *only* dog who ever tried to bite me was a Border Collie.

Imagine that.

“How about putting in the time and effort required by your dog’s breed and personality, instilling a sense of self-discipline and adequately restraining and supervising your dog at all times?”

Too sane and responsible reply.

Go to your room and don’t come back until you’ve worked up a good, irrational, histrionic froth, missy.

Should I thank you back for your crude and ignorant sarcasm? Did it make you feel better? Are you one of those who value dogs more than baby humans? Is it always the fault of the child who is mauled or killed? Would you like to READ my comments or just join the dog pile of stink along with your comrades? Emotional over reactions are not at all constructive. For the dogs or the children.

Now, let us directly examine your pre sarcasm words.

YOU took days to rehab some dogs. Good for you. But would you confidently place a “rehab” dog in an average family with small children? Would you sign over your personal and corporate assets for future liabilities? Would you disclose fully the conditions and history of the animal? Would you think it perhaps, wiser to place such an animal with some single, adult, who could give it the more direct and mature care it may need?

Just because YOU spent some time with some particular dog, does not cover any other dogs. Certainly not the vast wet blanket of ALL dogs you cast at me. Condemning all the dogs in shelters to death? I don’t think I used ANY of those words... Of course, you cover it with the usual caveats, “perfectly nice and deserving”. Could that be any less scientific if we tried? WHAT does that even mean... no no, I am not serious. Don’t try. I could mean whatever is convenient for the moment.

I would call it funny, that the only objections to “my opinions” are the “opinions” of others... laced with more open ended generalities and heart tugging emotions than a “Lifetime Original Movie”... but it surely isn’t funny and it surely isn’t debate.
